Hey guys,

I have been scarce lately, well scarce for me anyway...

My position at work has changed and my responsibility level has increased, this has caused me to put in some long hours. To compound the issue I have decided to make the transition from 21yrs of active duty service back to civilian life. Many things to do and not a lot of time to do it in.

When off of work when I have a spare moment I have been working on this:
What I have been up to. Z4OEamS

It's a 360 Chrysler engine that will be replacing the 318 in my pickup. The picture was taken tonight after I installed the casting plugs (frost plugs) and is all ready to assemble. Machine work was a nightmare and my $300 budget ended up at $500. This was due to 2 cracked heads out of 4 I had on hand. My son and I will be building it up over the next week or two, he seems excited to learn how it all works. This will be my first V8 build, but I have done several 4 cylinders and a couple motorcycle engines.

My Father in law dropped this off this past weekend:
What I have been up to. WPxVR6K

1949 Ford 8N. It's totally functional with the exception of the chocolate milk in the sump. I am hoping for a blown head gasket. Dreading a cracked block. My Father in Law was upset about it as he had no idea and it had been a while since he used it last. I am very grateful as it didn't cost me a dime. So that's another project!

No time for planes Sad

Nice machinery Ron. Congrats for the career move too Smile

I have found out that the busier I am at work, the less time and energy I have for "big stuff". My Saab and Honda "Café" projects have been pretty much dormant, but tinkering with model airplanes is something that I can do whenever I have an hour or so, and still get something worthwhile done. Moving to a newer house about a year and a half ago helped too, much less stuff to fix, upgrade and worry about.

Great that you have your son with you working and helping around the shop. My older son (12 years) is very much interested in model building and in motors, vehicles etc, the younger (9 years) not so much, although he does like to hang around and chat & ask questions while we work.

Let's see, bone stock flat head 4 cylinder, 25hp....oh wait you mean't the 360!

Well, seeing as the block was left outside for 10 yrs the machinist had to go .060 over to clean up the bores which puts me at 372 cubes. I'd rather have less cubes and more steel in the bore, guess we can't always get what we want. The increased displacement doesn't mean much as everything is pretty much staying stock except the cam which will be a stage 1 or what's considered an RV torque cam. Since it's a truck I wanted the torque.

It will get a 4bbl carb atop a a vintage Edelbrock intake. If I get 225hp amd 300ftlbs of torque i'll be happy with that.

I would have liked some 340 heads, it's just they don't come cheap. They flow a little better and have 2.02 intake valves compared to the 1.88" that I have.

Ron

You could of had it sleeved, were all the bores pitted?
Either way the extra cubes will help the torque a little especially with the torque cam and if you degree it in (get it installed straight up) it will be even better help your HP too. What kind of edelbrok intake is it? Older perfomer? (Bandit)

2 holes were pretty bad, the rest would have cleaned up at .030 over. Sleeves were $150 a pop and at that stage a new block would have been a better option. So I took the least expensive route and just bored it to the max. Even at that there was some slight staining.

The Edelbrock intake is an LD4B.

Mark, a twin turbo setup would be worth more than the entire truck!

yep, i know...it was suppose to be a joke of sorts....it would be cool!

I remember a guy in town put an Accel Turbo kit on his '57, this was late 70's and i think was about $1500, which we thought was crazy. I see constant posts on my facebook of twin turbo cars putting out 600-800 hp and to me that just boggles the mind, when i was a gearhead 300-350 hp was pretty damm good and 400+ was something you read about or seen on the strip.

I've heard of the Accel kit haven't seen one though 800hp is pretty easy to gain with today's single turbo kits provided the engine is built properly, the twin turbo's are hitting over 1700 or more with big blocks. The 18 deg 383 in my old camaro was around 550hp which is nasty for a naturally aspirated small block. My neighbor hated it when I started it to keep it wet lol. And speaking of heads, have you checked some of the racing/hotrodding swap meets? You could probably find a nice pair of Dart stage one aluminum street/strip heads with necked valves for pretty cheap maybe even with roller rockers. (Bandit the gearhead)

There is nothing so pretty as a cleaned up and rebuilt block Ron.

I used a 8N back in the early fiftys when I worked on a poultry farm after school and on weekends. They are numerous as flies around here in WV, seems like they never wear out.
