Is this Cox 09 worth considering?
I have the opportunity to buy a Tee Dee .09 which is missing the cylinder/piston/head assembly as well as the venturi and needle, but it is brand new and only $25. Are the required parts available enough to make this a worthwhile proposition? Basically, it is the case, crank, backplate, plastic carb body, retainer and prop driver, but as I said, all new.

"Investing"? Or "Collecting" ? Spend $25 on your investment, then double ( plus shipping) that amount to purchase the required pieces to make a complete running engine. http://www.exmodelengines.com/product.php?productid=18171&cat=254&page=2

I'd estimate you'd invest $75-95 for a complete, no box, no paperwork engine. If you have a airframe you want to put it on, or one you want to build, go for it. But please don't bank on selling your investment and retiring in leisure.
I'm sure it can repay you in dividends, of fun and pleasure!!
Oops, I pasted the incorrect links, yes there are parts available:

Fair call, but it's a good opportunity to get hold of a difficult to find engine. True, purchasing new parts from Matt or Bernie makes it a dear engine, but I wouldn't do it to try to make anything on it. It's one of those things that can sit in the cupboard until I manage to locate the required parts at a reasonable cost.
It probably won't be used in a model as I have plenty of options for a common muffled engine for that size aircraft. It's really just a matter of having one in the collection.

I have bought a NIB TD .09 for $90 so it wouldn't make sense to spend almost that much to build one. I might have a used cyl/piston in my parts stash. Most likely might not be a matched set.

Re: Is this Cox 09 worth considering?
Thanks Jason. For the moment I'd be happy to assemble one up just for display out of whatever parts I can find, so I'd be keen to hear from any members who might be able to help with a piston/cylinder and a venturi/needle assembly. It's not hard to find heads, needles (on their own), spinners, prop screws etc. but to purchase one of the currently available N.I.P cylinders would push the project well over my limit. Who knows, the case assy. may already be gone by the time I get back to it. It would be nice to have something other than just .049s in the stash (plus a Pee Wee & .051).

what I found in my parts stash is not worth sending even if it were free. The cylinder is scored and piston covered in surface rust.

I can see it going a lot higher than current. Seller has a bit of interesting stuff. Particularly nice Wen Mac Airacobra.

Re: Is this Cox 09 worth considering?
Yeah, 3 still available. I'm surprised that they haven't shifted any of them yet. Maybe the market out here is too limited. It's a bargain at $18USD. If they hang around long enough I might get tempted, but I could see it turning into a much more expensive engine than it should be. As I mentioned previously, it probably wouldn't be flown due to being difficult to muffle. If I make it up from bits then it's not really authentic & collectible and probably won't be worth the investment. But if I just decide I want one, then I suppose it is what it is.Jason_WI wrote:http://www.ebay.com/itm/COX-TEE-DEE-09-CRANKCASE-CRANKSHAFT-BACK-PLATE-/121849346433?hash=item1c5ec97981:g:8SkAAOSwSHZWfkzp
