As I posted a couple of months ago that it's been over a year since I flew my Fox powered Yak-9. The other day I was disturbed when I realized my planes were all strung together with spiderwebs Lol. Black Widows no doubt, as that's what mostly populates my shop. I should write about that in the "Shop Helpers" thread. But my 19 yo kitty mostly watches over me while I work.

Anyway, I got the old Yak down to preflight tonight and the fuel tank badly failed a pressure test. An old-old tin coffin tank, it's ready for a rebuild. But since I'm flying tomorrow(today was postponed due to weather), I borrowed a tank from my Shoestring, flushed it and strapped it on. Only 3 ounces, but good enough for fun flying.

The old 1958 Fox Stunt .35 was surprisingly loose and wet since I'd put plenty of ARO in it way back in 2015, but I decided to burp it to clear it out, plus I just wanted to hear it. So I checked the prop nut and moved any loose papers and articles of flying danger off the table, mostly Twister related odds and ends. I didn't want to try too hard to fire it up so I primed it with two venturis full of 35% 1/2A Glowplugboy fuel, figuring that oughtta wake it up pretty good. I worked it in thoroughly, put my lighter on the plug and gave the 10x5 prop a good hard backwards whack. It lit off with that wonderful roar and the damn thing ran for about 5 seconds. I had underestimated the amount of wind, and boxes of parts, sawdust, pencil and paintbrush cups and all went flying across the room, and for the first time in a month, my table was clean Lol.

I think the old girl is ready to go. 5-7 mph Southerly winds are forecast so tomorrow will be a perfect day for the little Sterling Yak. I'll try to get the camera on it. A bunch of us are meeting up at 2:00 tomorrow at the Fort, so I'll be back with a flight report.
See y'all then.
Rusty

Rusty

Seriously brother....run the castor burning engines OUTSIDE

The exhaust and fuel residue permeates into EVERY thing!

Soaks into any bare balsa
Contaminates the $$Kote and any tissue, silk, polyspan
if I recall correctly you DO use Armor-All in you fuels

The oil residue and ANY silicone will make painting finishes much more difficult with adhesion and fish eye

I constantly have to manage my stash of finishing products and raw balsa from my 2 pack a day cigarettes smoking..(only inside my Man Cave/Airplane factory) (( we do NOT smoke in our cars or home))

Early on I used to have a box fan in a window and bench test engines.... later I was having finishing problems

ciggy smoke and oil reside are evil and MUST be mitigated or eliminated

Jest sayin

Thanks for the compliments.

I like it even better with its deep red and chrome Great Planes spinner but I couldn't find that picture. That was my last(except the quick-shot Reed Speed Mustang) Rustoleum job ever. Flat white and L.kote.
Y'all will get to see it fly soon.
Rusty
