I thought it might be cool to build a simple small "sheet-wing" (profile) C/L model-airplane.. and "wood-burn" its trim. Finish with clear-coat Poly. Panel-lines done using a steel-rule as a guide, lettering/numbers.. rivets.. simulated scoops.. One could apply some cool "shading" with a little practice. The wood-burning is permanent.. and visible through the clear-coat; whether satin or gloss. Any "yellowing" from the Poly would just add a cool natural "patina" to the model with age.

I've never tried to apply wood-burning to balsawood.. but there are several kits with a nice selection of "tips" to experiment with.

Here's one on Amazon for $20.. and others are around the same price.. (note the "hot-knife".. a nice tool in itself for trimming plastic)

Roddie I have several wood burning kits and use them a lot when we host the grand kids

I do use them bit for burn removing Monokote to get back to balsa for gluing

I know my hands are way to shaky to try what you suggest on Balsa...hell I can't even drag a good panel line with a pen and guide...The varying density and grain balsa would be a disaster for me... BUT I think you are spot on that the result would look real cool and have a cool texture

On a similar note

I have one of the carbide tipped vibration engravers... I have never been able to write my ssn or name that is legible

Throw back to decades ago ...we were advised to mark all high value items so police could find them in Pawn shops

Yea.. the density of the balsawood will definitely play-into the "technique" of application. I particularly like the idea of the "permanence-factor" though. It's not going to "rub-off".. or "scrape-off". Alternately sealing with fuel-proof clear "dope" wouldn't be as durable.. but it would surely make for a lightweight airplane!
