Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
Couple of my favourite clips.
Bathurst handicap club race and coming from the back.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toLPTjE1GZk
Late to grid and has to start last from pit lane
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BGpdneSC2Q
I know, it's not cars but a cool clip all the same.

I think I may have been at this race meet.
Lot's of fun there Rod, engine sounds, cutting apexes, shifting.
Mark is on the lookout, sent me several off Facebook Market Place. One with the John Cooper Works engine package.

Yep, certainly is an iconic track and car Dave. From the driver's perspective you can really see how steep and tight some of the track is. You can also sense the frustration of the Falcon driver with the slower cars really keeping him hobbled. "Around this corner and...Oh look, there's a Brick in my way."

Yes I know the car and I drove one a few times. It was in 1970 the fastest front WD car in the world. The engine was a shortened Maserati V8, made by Alfieri, as in the Indy. That's why it has the unusual 90° angle. The gearbox is the 5 speed of the DS. The hydraulic system is also the same as the DS. It's a pitty that in the US, you didn't get the same SM as we did, due to the regulations: The car normally has 3 rectangular headlights with the centre ones that turm with steering but hydraulically operated and not by cable as with the DS. The lights were also covered with glass as the number plate. Then, there are the side reflectors and the unnecessary chrome strip on the side only on US models. The SM also had the DIRAVI system which stands for DIrection à RAppel asserVI: The steering wheel comes automatically back to the centre position. Also as an option, the RR wheels were available. RR stands for Résine Renforcée: wheels made of resin by Michelin, lighter and stronger than aluminium wheels
The car in the video has a suspension problem. Ther is no gas in the spheres anymore. You can see the car jumping up and down. It's an easy test to do: Whenpushing on the fenders, you can push the car easily to the ground. Without gas, it's a horror to drive.
I always liked the pursuit in Mean Machine with Burt Reynolds driving and Lynyrd Skynyrd on the radio
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7E5HEyYGI4
And in the 1971 Morocco rally with the resin wheels

The Burt Reynolds thing. What a horrible way to treat such a wonderful car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gotta admit, I'm a car guy, not a destruct a car guy. I get no thrill out of that, Hollywood or not.
Just me, not representative of the world.
I would love to own one, but I'm well past my "Sell by date."
Mark and I did just this morning replace the clutch master cylinder on my MG though. He bled while I filled and pumped.

Arrest me red Lieven. Love it and the Opera four-door.
Bring a trailer SM was "bid to $23,855". I don't know if it sold or if the reserve wasn't met.

This is a TV advert for Jean Paul Gaultier's perfume scandale with the SM Opera
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wlh4-7ht5lA
Chapron was a great coachbuilder for pre war and immediate post war luxury cars. With the decline of coachbuilding, he concentrated on the transformation of serial built cars to coupés and convertibles, mainly DS and also SM
http://leroux.andre.free.fr/carrossierchapron.htm
And the promotion movie for the SM in the US
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvKowAfwow0
Finally a period movie about the cars used by the gendarmerie in France in the early 70's: DS, SM and Alpine

Was there a car in that Scandal commercial.........
Interesting about Chapron. And so easy, just hit "translate" on the pop-up.

I've got nothing Lieven.
I have to apply American cars to your European silhouettes. #7 - early Corvair......... I know #9, when it comes to me I'll let you know.

Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
I recognized the Peugeot and the Herald too. Here’s a couple more:
2. Aston Martin DB4
6. Wartburg
Many of them look familiar but I just can’t seem to be able to name them. These are from before my time and were not really common around here in the mid ’70s onwards when I started to pay attention to cars

Maybe not Lieven? #9 1963 English Ford Anglia?
I had the doughty 1959 square-box, and was knocked over when the new style came out, but not enough to make me trade up, as the '59 was about the worst car i ever owned.

Bob, I don't think there's a Borgward in there but I might be wrong. I know the post war Hansa 1500 and the Isabella range, but they don't seem to match. I'm not the all-knowing quizmaster who test others. I don't have the answers to these images myself. To play, one has to log in on a German website and then it's a multiple guess thing. Most of the cars are of Central European origin indeed.
#2 is not a Touring body as Astons have in general, but a Pininfarina body. The front part with headlights is identical to the #1 Peugeot 404 designed by Pininfarina. 2 is a car with the prancing horse. For #6 I was thinking of a Skoda Octavia, early 60's. #9?.. some Rootes group car? maybe Hillman or Singer?

Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
Nice looking ”Ponton”, Bob, and probably thrifty too with the 55hp 1.8 litre diesel
Should be quite simple mechanically and built like tank, so maintenance should be easy unless something breaks of course. Usually these got killed by rust, rather than mechanical failures. if they are maintained properly, and rust-proofed, they go on forever. You will need a calendar to check the 0 to 60 time, for 60 to 0 a stopwatch is ok as it wil only take 4 or 5 seconds
Still, very nice, well built cars.
