Re: OK Cub Closing
This I understand because unsold inventory is money tied up until sold. Because of the limited market interest, unless such inventory was picked up almost for nothing and there was space to stock, could be very slow moving. The entry level Cox engines are better performers, reasonably priced and the OK's aside from nostalgia don't have much to offer otherwise, IMO.EXModelEngines wrote:Agree with what those have said with overarching themes about the hobby as a whole. I cannot speak for other vendors, but we have to be extremely careful where we allocate our limited capital.

Re: OK Cub Closing
Ghost , I would have to say that when I was a kid during spring & early fall my buddies and I flew at least 3 times a week almost all COX powered along with testors wen macs and a few Cub's probably a quart of fuel every 3 weeks between the 3 of us. I started grass cutting heavy around 15 I worked all the time either cutting grass or at the farm. I didn't fly again till my mid 40'sand I would say for the 7 years or so since I came back it's been almost all Fox 15x powered.with some Fox .35 in the mix as well. I like the Cub's because they run great start easy and don't scream as fast as the Cox's do I just enjoy them more now than I did as a kid, enough oil in them and they will run forever, I will say that as many times as I stuffed my Cox's into the dirt I don't think I ever hurt one, I did break both my Cub's cases which Ted replaced last year almost 40 years later. Re: OK Cub Closing
Right now there is an OK Cub .024 on E-Bay, with 5 days left to bid. The bid right now is at $24.50, plus only $3.75 to ship.

What is the weight of a tankless .049 Cub? I have a plane that will be nose-heavy with a product engine in the nose.
TIA!

I have two styles of the .049 B engines. One is the newer glow head version and weights at 37. 6 grams. The other is the older style with the glow plug, and it weights a little less at 36.8 grams. Hope that helps you.

Well it appears Ted was serious about retiring, OK Engines site is no longer up, I'm glad I stocked up on parts before he called it quits, I'm going to miss him I really enjoyed dealing with him the last few years. TJ

Re: OK Cub Closing
This I would understand. It costs money to have a website with a unique name. Ted is up in years and there comes a time in one's life when such activities must come to a close. It would not surprise me that there may already be someone in the mix who will be carrying portions of the banner to dispense with any remaining stock.
I was disappointed to see Penn Valley Hobby Center finally close its E-Bay doors, after many years maintaining their mail order store. The proprietor and his wife finally had to really retire. They used E-Bay to clear the last of their remaining stock.
We've also seen greats like Indy R/C, Ace R/C, Hobby Shack, America's Hobby Center, and others fizzle away. It's a changing world. Asà es la vida. Such is life.

Re: OK Cub Closing
George, I knew the owners of Penn Valley for more than 40 years. Bill and Jean were the owners. Jean unfortunately passed away prior to the shop closing. I miss her, she would always let me go through all the drawers of parts behind the counter. Bill took a bad fall down the steps and it was shortly after that I saw him confined to a wheelchair. There was still large inventories of stock of all types that were never liquidated. At this point, one individual was handling the Ebay store. Not only did they own the hobby shop, they also owned a kit manufacturing business Shive industries which also kitted R&N freeflight models.

Re: OK Cub Closing
Ken, thanks for the up to date information on Bill and Jean Shive. Last I bought anything was may be 4 or 5 years ago. I didn't know of Jean's passing, and sorry to hear about Bill's fall and being confined to a wheel chair, wonder if may be he broke a hip. I bought engine parts and some kits, props, etc. Wrote them a real nice note of thanks on one item I received from them on E-Bay, found they were both Christians and knew the Lord personally, which was nice.
I had a very good impression of them as really nice folk whom I wouldn't have minded being neighbors with.

Re: OK Cub Closing
Does anyone know anything about a Cub .049 fixed compression diesel?
I just got this one today: https://www.ebay.com/itm/O-K-CUB-049-Fixed-Compression-Diesel-NEW-/174214438202?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=HgAVXfOqEt1WyJ1XQQLE%252B1ghz5g%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc
It seems to have a standard .049B cylinder with milled flats in top fin for cylinder removal with a Cox wrench and a swaged (like Cox) con-rod to piston joint. The crank is straight .049B and I haven't examined the crank shaft yet. The copper head is heavy and does don't have the shock absorber contra piston set up like in a normal Cub .049 diesel. Piston-cylinder fit and compression is superb.
I am guessing that the heavy copper head is for pre-heating the engine with a micro torch in order to start it.

Looks home made to me . I never seen a Cub with a fixed compression head . I do have the .049 and .074 and they are nice engines .

Re: OK Cub Closing
It could, but without compression adjustment probably not very well.
