A little tether car cox powered
I had seen Leo Squire from Skystone make a few cox powered tether cars and I decided to try my hand at making one. He used a Hubley toy race car and I decided to use the same toy. I have worked on making a tether car engine out of a Cox reedy .049. using a production engine crankcase and cylinder I made a unit that mounted induction and provided for where to bolt a wheel. I made a flywheel for the engine and as I was doing it decided to switch crankcase to a car unit with the big crank since it provided for a better aligment for the flywheel with the taper at the end instead of splines. I still have to make a gas tank and paint my little tether car. I made a steering wheel, air cleaners, wheels and an exhaust out of aluminum. Here are a few pics.

Looks very neat. I am just concerned about cooling..with no fan on the engine shaft or extended heat sink on the glow head this engine looks destined to getting roasted in the closed compartment. Are there some gills or similar ventilation opening on the car body that channel the oncoming air to the cylinder when the car runs?

Juan, very cool stuff. I've enjoyed your work over the years especially your tank work. I have a new Hubley kit somewhere, I received it in or around 1977.

Re: A little tether car cox powered
Hello Guys
I uploaded a video to you tube of the engine running is short because I did not want to overheat the engine. It helps to use a cox texaco 5 fin head but with no fan or airflow the engine has to be cooled by running it rich. I still have to make some cooling holes on the body to get some cooling to the engine. Thanks for the wonderful comments.

Milled aluminum can be beautiful.
Thought it would be simple to just slap a Cox heat sync on the head but it would never fit in the confines of your tether car. What's your solution. Boat type water jacket. No water source. Ya going to need a radiator, water pump, gaskets, battery, hoses, and anti freeze...……….

Re: A little tether car cox powered
Ditch the starter string pulley and flywheel and reengineer with a Cox Buick Riviera style combination flywheel/pinion/cooling impeller. You don't need the starter string pulley anyway; the best way to start these things is with an up side down bicycle.

Hello Tico
I do have a unit from a dragster but it won`t work well on the little Hubley toy open wheel car since it would make mounting the engine harder. I made the fly wheel with slots thinking it would be hard to start but using a few drops of fuel in the venturi and spinning the wheel with my fingers have worked real good for starting. I was going to use my home made electric starter but there was no need. If I was to build a full body tether car the flywheel with the fan would be the ticket as you have suggested. Thanks for the advice.

Re: A little tether car cox powered
I have done some more work in the little Hubley Car. I made an aluminum gas tank, previously I tried to make one out of brass but I changed my mind and turned a tank on my small lathe. I also cleaned, primed, painted and added some decals I made in my printer.
Here are some pics. I still have to apply clear polyurethane to protect the paint job from the fuel. Once that`s done I will install the engine and other parts.

Hello Getback
The tank idea came up after thinking about and starting to cut brass to solder together, I could not make it look good. Making it out of aluminum provided mounting points that I could tap with a 4-40 tap to mount the tank with only two screws.I was going to ad some blue paint to the nose but after looking at it I changed my mind. I didn`t want to ad a lot of decals not related to Cox or tether car because I thought they would look out of place.

Re: A little tether car cox powered
Well I`m done with the little car. i was able to clear coat the body with PPG urethane clear. When I looked at my paint sorage i noticed that I had no reducer and nowhere to buy some. I looked around and found some mineral spirits I had bought at a hardware store and decided to try mixing a little clear and catalyst using it. I tried it on a propeller to see how it would work since when I mixed it I noticed it turned cloudy but I kept stirring the mix and it cleared up. The prop came out Ok so I painted the body. Here are some pics on how it came out.
