Scientific F-51 Mustang

Scientific F-51 Mustang
Scientific made three 1/2A CL Mustang kits that I know of. The 18” Little Mustang and 23” F-51 Mustang hollow logs, and the 18” Sizzlin' Liz Mustang with box fuse and built-up wing.
This one is a clone build of the 23” hollow log Scientific F-51 Mustang. I don't remember exactly when I built it, but I remember flying it at Fall SMALL in '20.
The color scheme is a simplified version of this real Mustang.

It is built close to the kit, with 2 mods. I changed the tail to be closer to scale using a P-51D 3-view and a photocopier.

Using the photocopier again, I altered the wing outline, also to be closer to scale. This had the side benefit of increasing the wing area slightly, from 86 to 94 sq. in.

In the absence of the kit parts, I had to make my own canopy & cowl. I carved this canopy plug, and Brian at Dynamic Balsa vac formed it.

The cowl is balsa/ply, glassed and painted. Paint is Rustoleum. The silver is not fuelproof at all, especially where it is exposed to raw fuel from priming. The base yellow seems to be completely fuelproof. I wanted a smooth nose with a close fitting spinner. This was difficult due to the small cross section of the log.

There are no exposed fasteners. The cowl is held on by one screw, accessed through the chin scoop. The snap starter is great for cowled engines.

The engine is a QRC with the muffler removed.
Yikes! It's been a while since the cowl was off. I need to clean that up.

Another fine looking replica ! Thats nice to know someone to do the vac. forming for you alot easier when set up for it . Like the way you have no screws and such showing .
How did it fly ?

Re: Scientific F-51 Mustang
This one flies very well for a sheet wing airplane. Better than most of the Scientific hollow logs, because it has more wing area than most of them. It will do inside & outside loops, lazy eights, and inverted flight.
That is also the extent of the pilot's ability, so it is a good match.

Re: Scientific F-51 Mustang
Really nice job on your scratch build of the Mustang, which was (kit 70). I have the Sizzlin Liz Mustang (kit 144) that has the built up body and wing. I did not use the plastic formed top for the fuselage. I made the fuselage top from 1/4 balsa as to the cockpit as well. The Sizzlin Liz is an awesome stunter, flew with a Cub 049 B, a 5 1/4 in. X 3 prop. Trimmed with 1.8 grams to the tail. I used two, 22 caliber air rifle pellets flattened and glued. Does nice lazy 8's with large inside and outside loops on 35 ft. lines. You mentioned the Little Mustang which was, (kit 18) There was another kit that had two planes together, (kit S11-150) It built a profile F-51 mustang along with the profile F-86 Sabre jet. Another Mustang, (Kit S144) had a profile body, a large built up wing span of 25 1/4 in. and 110 in. wing area. It flew with engine's of .049 to .099 for power. That Mustang was from a catalog dated March 1962. There were 5 other large wing planes of 120 in. wing area. Bonzo (kit S111), Cessna 170 (Kit S116), Hawk (Kit S112), Super Cub (Kit S113 and Spitfire (Kit S115). Nice job once again. Eddy

Re: Scientific F-51 Mustang
Thanks for the information on Scientific kits, Eddy. I knew there was a kit with a P-51 and F-86, but thought it included the Little Mustang. That's what I get for thinking!
Was the 25" Mustang the one they called a "Super Mustang"? Thanks to 944 Jim, I have that plan, and it looks to be a post-war P-51H.
I didn't know about the 120 sq. in. kits. Is the plan for the Spitfire available anywhere? I really would like to see that one.

Re: Scientific F-51 Mustang
In answer to your question, yes the 25 in. Mustang is called just, " Super Mustang". All of said models in last reply sold for just $1.98. When one thinks about that, they were a really good buy for that price in 1962. I delevered news papers back then, most of my money went for kits, motors and 45 rpm records. Nobody reads news papers today or buy's 45 rpm records anymore, well maybe Mr. Cook might. My computer is still running on Windows 7, I can't upload pictures to this site anymore. If I could, I have a dozzen Scientific full page adds and dealer adds that I would share on this site, sadly I can't. On the second page of same add are three more interesting stunters with built up wings by Scientific. Champ with 23 in. wing, Combat Ace with 19 in. wing and the Cadet with 22 in. wing, all fly with .049 to .099, believing all would be OK Cub engines. Some showing the OK CUB Bear decal on the tail. Re: Scientific F-51 Mustang
Duane,
I'm glad you.mentiies the Super Mustang...that makes four Scientific Mustang kits. I actually forgot I had it until you mentioned yours.
Eddy,
Shoot me your email address via PM. I have access to a file transfer program courtesy of Uncle Sam. I'll send a "file drop-off" request. You open the site and deposit the files. Max file size is well over 3 GB. You could just about drop wood into the files and still have capacity.
I can run it the other way so you can see how it works. I'll drop the Super Mustang plan to you so you can see how it works. JPG or PDF...I can resale and reset file types for posting here.
Ron Cribbs can vouch for the system.
