PA, Hurricane Sandy and CL fun
So,
Work has taken me to New Jersey and 26 miles away from Ken Cook's flying field.
So Ken and I decided to get together, on the worst day possible to do a little CL tutorial. Ken said he brought his worst planes, if those were his worst then he must have some real nice ones.....
Anyway with hurricane Sandy looming we set up up on the field for an hour or so of flying. It was so nice to be able to talk CL with someone face to face! I learned so much in that short time such as fuel delivery, flight trim, engine tuning, build tips, covering methods and most importantly how to fly properly! (thanks Shawn)
Ken's son Shawn ( hope that is the correct spelling) is a superb pilot, that is putting it mildly. Watching him fly was pure joy! He made it look so easy, it was very humbling. At one point he looked over at Ken and I and just smiled at us all the while flipping and darting that combat plane about, the same as if he was actually watching it. That is skill gents.
Here are a few pics and a video to watch. I would like to publicly thank Ken and Shawn for spending the afternoon in cold, wet and windy weather just to help a newb out. My hats off to them and I can't thank you guys enough! Hopefully we can do it again.
Ron
Rusty that Flite Streak was pretty cool. I am thinking of doing a .35 model it's so cool.

Ron thank you for the compliments. The Philly Fliers would certainly enjoy your company. Let's hope you get out to this neck of the woods again. Ken

Ken:
Isn't that a "Junior Ringmaster" shown in the pix? What does it have for power?
The "Flite Streak" is as nice as I seen! Excellent job on the three-color scheme that makes a "Streak" so distinctive.

That Ringmaster is actually a standard sized S1-A. It runs well on Fox .35 power. It flys well too.

I assume that's one of those combat planes. What kind of engine is that? My wife asked me if it was a baby crying when I first clicked on the video. I guess with that kind of power the wind is more manageable, if you can keep up with the plane.
It's really cool to meet other forum members in person. I wish we could all get together.

And how well I remember them doing just that on green can "Power Mist" nitro fuel my "go to" preference until it went out of production.
Just the aroma of "Power Mist" had an intoxicating quality.

That was a Norvel Rusty, .051 I think the prop was cut down to 4" or so. It was a real screamer as you can tell. Ken said it was probably turning close to 30K. I don't doubt it either. The venturi was removed on that one to increase airflow.

Re: PA, Hurricane Sandy and CL fun
Hello Dave, the Flite Streak is actually an ARF model. Unfortunately, I can't take credit for the covering and color scheme. I did assemble it. I wasn't happy with the leadouts and I installed new ones using .027 cable and my terminations. I heard too many horror stories of failed crimped connections. The Ringmaster was built in the 80's and it's certainly has had a share of incidents. I do enjoy the Fox .35. Yesterday winds were a handful but the Fox seemed happy pulling through it.
Rusty, the combat planes are Larry Driskill Litehawks. These were sold in a pair and were designed around the VA engines. I do have VA's but I try to use them as little as possible. They're a bit rare and I don't want to damage them. The plane in the video is using a BigMig .061. The other is using a AME .061. Both planes have engines with Revlite cylinders. What I found in my experimentation is that the AME turns up a bit more but it won't swing the same size prop as the Big Mig does at the same rpm's. Fuel consumption on both is nearly identical but in order to match the speed of the Big Mig, I had to trim an additional 1/4" off of the prop.
Yesterday's weather wasn't a good test to see how well these planes run. Due to the winds, I really had to set things off leaner than I normally would like to. On one of the runs it went off quite nicely as I was running some high nitro fuel. I use the higher nitro due to easier needling and consistent runs. Ken

A Revlite Big Mig, damn, I guess that's how my Refried Bean is going to sound if I prop it like that. For the sake of reducing high speed carnage, I'll start off with a slower prop. Once I get it maidened and trimmed I want to experiment with different props. I have MAs and APCs to work with. I'm looking forward to getting my Norvel in the air. I hope I can get close to finishing that plane this week. It's going to have more wing area than a stock Bean.
