Re: Ian's Cox Flight Contest progress
Ian, That's a nice bail!!! Exactly the concept. I hope it works. Did you catch my thought on "pole-flex"? If you have any issues with the bail not "topping-out" on the pole, a more flexible pole should correct that... by centrifugal force.
Also... are you using a bearing between the poles' cap and the bail? Maybe Teflon or Delrin? Maybe some dry-lube would reduce friction...
At any rate, I'm psyched that you decided to try this, and I can't wait to see how it works! The plane looks GREAT!!! You shoe-horned all that radio gear in there... Nice work on everything!

Re: Ian's Cox Flight Contest progress
Another digression.
My flying area is syill not fairing well. I have over seeded it twice, applied lawn dressing ........................... I hate gardening with a vengance!
It still isn't level - without bumps! - and so I have re seeded it again and this time - rollered the damn thing!
I made an offer for one at the local garden centre - it looked like it had been there years - rusty and siezed! - made a ludicrously cheap offer and it was mine.
Got it home, filled it with water - the drum is metal and so it was heavy anyway!
Now I have level and flat ground but still too many bare patches. I hope I haven't left the seeding too late for this year.
I also had the help of a Robin. It follows me around in the garden. Not one little bit frightened!

I am curious to see how the "stunt-bail" works! "Astro-turf" never needs mowing... stays green... and is hypo-allergenic too...
Just sayin'

Looks like a sweet little plane. I'm dabbling a little in RC now, was this a kit or did youscratch build it from plans?

This is kit built - a few of the old Keil Kraft and Veron kits have now been reproduced. I would only be able to buy balsa wood by mail order - no local stockist, no local traditional model shop!duke.johnson wrote:Looks like a sweet little plane. Ian's Cox Flight Contest progress
WELL DONE Ian!
WELL DONE!
Two observations:
1. On the 'Nighthawk', it was difficult to see in the photo, but it looks like a spring loaded 1/2A wheel keeper on the axle. If this is the case, be sure the spring end is positioned so it won't 'snag' the grass upon landing. Or better yet, solder a small washer to retain the wheel.
2. On both of the models, the landing gear placement looks to be close to the C/G.
Ideal for paved surfaces, but not grass.
If you examine OLDER FF and C/L designs, they flew from grass much taller & rougher turf. Their landing gear was bent forward till almost behind the propeller. Thus enabling them to take-off and land on the rougher terrain.
Have enjoyed the build sessions and especially the videos!
The very best to you and again.....WELL DONE!

Cracking stuff Ian
I'll take time to read it all later but meantime,-
The bipe looks tail heavy to me.
It seems to drag it's tail around which if it were 'proper'
RC wouild indicate just that.
and
Praps think about a Li fe batt and loose the regulator.
Or
a good old nimh 4 (prob lightest option) or 5 cell
http://www.componentshop.co.uk/4-8v-1-4aaa-120mah-square.html
is what was in my FF5 earlier this year/5 digital metal servos 3(5 mins) aerobatic flights with this pack
15 grams
