New ? old Flyer - Which Engine
I started flying in the 1950's and now that I have retired I've jumped in with both feet!!
I have met some very nice people at the Jim Walker club in Portland Or. and I will start flying there soon.
Soooo, now the question is which engine to buy for fun & hopefully some stunts if I dont crash & burn first.
The lower end of the $$ scale has the "Black Widow" & the "Super Bee" next is the "Bumble Bee" and the top is the Venom II .
But then I wonder is it worthwhile to look for a Tee Dee since I dont have any exp. with them.
Thanks for your help, RK FLYER

Re: New ? old Flyer - Which Engine
Well,
It depends on what you want to do. The Bee type engines are good for roundy round and some mild stunting. They will help you get your feet wet again. The TD can do it all and that is where you will end up eventually. If it were me I would buy a TD from the get go. It will save you time and money in the long run.
Just my thoughts.

I totally agree with Ron. You can pick up a TeeDee on eBay for less than $50 and will never go back to a reed valve engine once you try it.

Re: New ? old Flyer - Which Engine
RK, are you the guy from Beaverton? I live over by the Hillsboro airport. The fireballs are pretty good guys. The last few weeks I try to get there on a Wednesday or a Friday. The guys are pretty helpful. But, the best thing about flying with those guys is that, at 50, I'm the youngest guy there! Ahh-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!
Keep your eye out on eBay for a TD .049 or .051. I got one not long ago for $25 plus shipping because it was mounted on a glider power pod and just didn't seem to catch anyone's eye. You never know when one TD goes for $25 and another identical engine goes for $50 the next hour.

I agree too. The Tee Dee .049/.051 is less finicky than tanked Bees, and can be depended on to start every time and run strong. No need to test run it at home before you go out to fly, just to make sure it will start at the field.

Does the Portland site require mufflers? Whatever engine you choose, get a starter spring.

No one said anything when I flew my .049's without a muffler there.stevej wrote:Does the Portland site require mufflers? Whatever engine you choose, get a starter spring.

Re: New ? old Flyer - Which Engine
I don't think they require mufflers at Delta Park. We fly combat contests there and carrier contests. Some of the carrier and combat planes run un-muffled Nelson .36's. FYI, there will be another fun fly at Delta Park on Labor Day 10am-3pm and it's a potluck lunch. Here's the link to the flyer.

So, bring your planes and food for lunch.
"Crazy for C/L Mark"- I should be able to make it, I'll try to bring the whole family this time. Can you make it?

Come to the potluck/fun fly on Labor day. That's how "fill in the blank" Mark and I meet, on July 4th. We can get pictures for the CEF family album. Which we still need to get started.

Rusty, I'd like to take credit for the idea. But I just remembered someone like Kim or Ron saying we should start a CEF Family Album when we meet members. I thnink it should be a Sticky. You know how to do that don't you?

Re: New ? old Flyer - Which Engine
Suggest a TD .049 OR .051 which are more commonly available in my experience. Used the $50 range will get you a good engine.

Re: New ? old Flyer - Which Engine
Hooah! I took that day off, but didn't even think about it being a holiday! I'll be there with something to fly. I might even convince the wife to go. Probably not, but maybe I can get another person to show up. I might even have the Flite Streak back together by then. It's in the build/repair queue. Maybe I'll move it up a couple of places.duke.johnson wrote:

Tee Dee
WoW!! I said I've jumped in with both feet , So now I have a 049 Tee Dee on the way from E Bay!
I've also been looking at planes and there are a few that I really like from the Minnesota Modeler. The Sky Writer and the Snapper are at the top of the list. I built the 1/2A Snapper way back in the late 50's early 60's so now I can Fly it again!

You can't legitimately claim "both feet" status until you have several dozen Cox engines. Many of us do!
