Re: AMF Wen-Mac parts or help
I will take it, if for nothing else then parts. I found the prop for the engine yesterday, surprise surprise, but no heads.Kim wrote:Hey Pat,goody wrote:Kim the Mk XIII picture you posted is the right one. The head in the far right is the one I have left. I use to buy my heads from Testors I think, don't really remember. I at one time had several heads, and a cylinder but they have been lost in 50 years. According to the 0.049 users group the Mk XII and XIII are interchangeable, mfg dates 1964-1966. The difference in the motors is Testors on the Mk XII. Heads and a needle valve or two would be good, or if you want to get rid of it I can take the whole motor. I would like to be able take a burned out plug and adapt it to use a standard short 1/4 in. plug. I have both pieces of my needle valve and can possibly silver braze it back together. I can also turn a new one from 3/16" bar but the compound taper may be a problem, very crude machinist skills, and a Unimat micro lathe.Kim wrote:Think so...but also thought Pat was going for as original as possible. We'll see when he checks in...

Yeah the poor Wen Mac needles AWAYS took it on the chin, and they're the one item I have to swap around to run my engines. There are probably some in Ron's batch, so you should be in business. If you think you have a use for this engine, I got it turning easy with good compression, and the spring starter IS good! (Miracles!)
Anyway. let me know and I'll shoot it to you on the cheap !

Kim,
I picked up a couple of scrappers on ebay, both seized, one testors throttle head Mk XII (broke crank), and one Wen-Mac Mk XIII, good needle valve. Haven't tested the heads to see if they will work.
Were you going to send me some parts, how much you need for the shipping??

Yo Pat,
You should get that core engine and it's two heads tomorrow or so. I included the notched-style head in case you could use it as-is or, as a spare practice part for your experiments in threading a plug into the thing.
I sent it on the cheap for 2 bucks and change so the money's no factor...just do a post on your progress if you get it going!

Will most certainly post progress with pictures in case someone else wants to duplicate my efforts. I want to remember the old glow heads burned out frequently, mostly when the engine started and the clip wasn't jerked off immediately. I went though a bunch of heads.

1.5 volt dry cell lantern battery, I used to fight that over and over.Cribbs74 wrote:What voltage were you using?
Will be making my own fuel now for a few runs, I have the ethanol and castor oil. When I flew in college the club made fuel in a 25 gal drum, several of the guys in the club raced dragsters too, we usually flew every weekend, 3 or 4 combat sessions burns up a lot of fuel, we flew 1/2A and 1A mostly, although one of the guys had a Stearman biplane scaled for a barbie doll, somewhere around a 5-6 foot wingspan, Enya 90 was the engine, 14" prop, he flew wire control on 80# test steel shark leader with a throttle.
The club had roughly 60 flyers, we usually had 3 circles running at any given time. I still have the wing from my 1A
Zero, it didn't make it through the last battle.
I don't remember the exact mixtures but will start with 80/20 then see if I can get some nitro to add to it. I don't want to run hotter than 5% nitro or will smoke the old engines.

Actually the Wen-Mac heads with the flats do not use a gasket, they have a 3mil aluminum ring turned into the base of the head and that acts as the gasket. The other style heads I will have to check to see if they have the ring. So far I have taken apart all 4 of the engines I have and none have a gasket. I plan on using a thing copper gasket on the twin and the singles.

Ron, Last I knew you were out of the country until Nov. 24, so I finally got around to posting you back. I have sort of started the design for the build. Let me know where to send the $20 to for the parts you have.

Not specifically about your plane, but this is an interesting read.

Nice plane, Wen-Mac made several different versions of this plane, SNJ (Navy) and (Army) AT-6. They fly like most model airplanes made of plastic.
