Does anyone have any experience with a Cox Mantis?

Re: Does anyone have any experience with a Cox Mantis?
Here is the fuel tank vent as it comes out the bottom of the fuse. It is bent to point forward and slightly to the aircraft's right, to point into the prop's slip stream.

The plane originally came with a non-steerable tail wheel. I couldn't see the sense in installing a throttled engine without a steerable tail wheel.

Here is a quick shot of the main gear and the fuel tank vent. With the tank vent on the bottom of the fuse the fuel will not get on the aircraft when I fill the fuel tank.

Very nice. Looks like you're really thinking this build through.

I like the way you have everything configured into logical presence , and adding the tail was good your right ,whats the use in throttle with out ground control . Looking good fit90. getback

Looks good. Be carefull with that spring starter though. My experience is that Tee Dees eventually eat the spring, it would wrap up around that carb pretty good when it happens.

Re: Does anyone have any experience with a Cox Mantis?
Jim,
Thank you for the heads up on the spring starter. I have had that happen with the silver ones and have found that they can be re-bent a little to keep them away from the prop. I have not had any issue with the black springs, yet.
Thank you,
Bob

All the radio gear, including the battery and switch weighs just 2.5 ounces.

Three JR SM22 servos, a Spektrum 2S 300 mAh LiFe battery, a SpektrumAR400 4 channel receiver and an unknown manufacturer's switch

Got the servos installed tonight. Having a little trouble getting the throttle linkage working smoothly. I will post some pics after I get the throttle linkage sorted out

And here is the new and improved tail wheel assembly. That is a piece of fuel tubing over the tail wheel assembly wire. It will be attached to the rudder with a strip of covering material.

Kind of. I glued a piece of 3/32" balsa cross grain across the top of the fuselage to mount the receiver and battery to with Velcro. I will post a picture this weekend. I am hoping to completely finish the model and run the installed engine this weekend.

Re: Does anyone have any experience with a Cox Mantis?
I am waiting for some pics to go from my phone to my email. I will post them if and when they show up. I finished it! I went to run it and taxi it up and down my drive way but ran into some issues. The tee dee had a habit of just dying at idle. Plus, it idled way high. It ran like a kittle on the test stand. Guess things didn't move to the airplane as well as I hoped. I switched to a medallion which has an aluminum carb body, starter spring, carb and a coxengines.com "tee dee power" piston/cylinder. I am hoping the different intake in the crank shaft will tame the idle characteristics. I have registered with the FAA, re-joined the AMA and will send in my application and dues to re-join my R/C club this week. I would love to be able to maiden this plane in the next month or so. But, first, I need to get the engine sorted out thoroughly. Pics to come.
