Crockpot Question

My Daughter got me a small crockpot for cleaning my engines. My question..... Are the fumes from the antifreeze harmful or do I need to take it outside and what temperature should I cook them at?

Placing it in a well ventilated area outside of the house proper is the safest. I use mine in the garage since it's closed off from the rest of the house and I can crack the garage door if any odor builds up. I set the heat to where it's hot to the touch -- probably in the 130° to 160° range -- you don't want it to boil at all. I use full strength antifreeze (NOT the environmentally safe brand). It will attack some plastics and can cause discoloration of aluminum if left too long, so check regularly.

What Andrew said. But I have let mine boil however unintended with no ill effects. On badly soiled engines I have found that it takes 6-8 hours in the pot to do an acceptable job, lightly dirty engines around 4-6 works well. It works wonders to unstick parts and take-down screws. Almost common place for me anymore to heat before disassembly, no more stripped or hogged out screw heads.

I avoid the fumes, but with a wind shift I have smelled them. Not nice but nothing the typical gas station jockey hasn't inhaled before.

Way to go Joe , I have been tring to find me a small /cheap crock for cleaning with no success yet , Bob (rsv1cox) is the master from what I have seen a bring basket cases back to as new condition as I 've seen Santa

I forgot to mention that you don't need to dump the antifreeze after one use. It's good until it starts to get pretty grungy. After use, I just skim off anything that might be floating on top of the liquid then store the remainder in the pot with the lid on. The old formula antifreeze apparently has a sweet flavor and is attractive to pets, so make sure that dogs and cats cannot get access --- it's pretty deadly.

I used the crook pot method a lot to clean up swap meet "jewels". You can find them at good will or salvation army for a few bucks, works great, just don't forget you left them in there!

The Rival 2 quart pot ($8.96) is the one I use. I like the small pot since it holds most any engine and takes less antifreeze -- you need enough to ensure everything is covered.

I leave the top on -- it fits loosely enough that vapor can escape, but seems to hold the odor down (I don't mind the smell of antifreeze, however). Since I have animals, I also don't have to worry about them or the neighbor's getting into it.

Yes, leave lid on and use in well vented area, fumes are toxic.
