Sportsman with twin-bypass cylinder??

Sportsman with twin-bypass cylinder??
Hi Folks, has anyone got a definitive answer to this--did Cox themselves ever fit the Olympic twin-bypass-with-boosters cylinder to the Sportsman? I've seen two up for sale recently, one claiming to be new, both with the twin-bypass cylinder, and one of my own also has it. I thought the Sportsman only had the one bypass-unboostered cylinder.

Re: Sportsman with twin-bypass cylinder??
Hi Robbasdog, and welcome to the forum.
As far as I know, the Sportsman only came
with a single bypass. That said, I picked up
one with a twin bypass cylinder last year.
I took for granted the P/C was replaced with
an Olympic assembly. Maybe your on to something.

Re: Sportsman with twin-bypass cylinder??
Thanks for the welcome! I figured fitting the Olympic P/C was the quickest, easiest and therefore cheapest way for either factory or owner to uprate the performance, so makes sense whoever did it. Must be a really common mod...

Mine is twin bypass. No telling if it was born that way though.
I'll break out the M.A.N. Issues From the early 60's and see if I can find a thorough report.

Re: Sportsman with twin-bypass cylinder??
Aye, Ron, there's the rub! No way to know! I'd like a 100% A1 factory-original example for my collection, but how can I tell if I don't know what really WAS original. I might already have it! And it's not like the bubble-packs were sealed in any way, is it? All part of what makes our little obsession so interesting, huh?....

Original Sportsman
I have a Sportsman that was a Christmas gift in about 1960(?). While it was brand new in the box, I do not have the box...what 10 year old will ever keep a box? i will open it up and have a look, just as soon as work schedule permits, and post some photos if that would be helpful.

Re: Sportsman with twin-bypass cylinder??
Hi Steve, thanks that would be great, look forward to the pics. I was lucky as a kid, my Dad was a Toolmaker by profession and was a stickler for keeping things in great original condition, so I only lost one engine box, and that simply fell apart from being played with so often! Still hard to replace now, of course, and repro boxes , even the quality ones, are a poor substitute. Those Cox blister-packs always amused me, no kid I ever knew had the patience to open one carefully!!!
