Re: Cox .01 /.02 /.05 /.09 /.15 Speed Planes
Thank you Mauricio, I went ahead and bought a new never ran TD .020 to test the aluminium
back plate with, looking to see what's possible with a fresh cylinder and piston. Will post a vid result.
See pics note has a full metal cylinder no cutout or thin walled with skirt, it is
unlike all my other .020 cylinders. The NV has a groove in the center at the thumb
screw that is different too. Other than than no HD knurl markings on the glow plug lends
me to think this may just be the last design of the TD .020 before being discontinued.

Someone mentioned carburetor for TD .010? Little gem products made one for the .010 back in the 80’s. I fixed the broken links for the pictures. Photobucket can pound sand for their ransom money.

I never ran the engine. Not sure how the carb would affect performance at top end or how low it would idle.

Only the last .010 TDs were black. As far as I know TD .020 plastic was always red. Now MECOA did make a run of black plastic .020 tanks and carb bodies a few years back so you may see a black and gold TD .020 pop up on eBay but it never came from Cox that way.

Re: Cox .01 /.02 /.05 /.09 /.15 Speed Planes
Thank you very much Mauricio,
I will be able to tell if my location / elevation / air quality / humidity is effecting best possible rpm.
Your last two examples have hit 19k + so hope to do the same with a fresh engine.
Hi Getback I have only seen red tanks for TD .020 just the TD .010 last runs where black.
Key thing is the cylinder is different from the rest thick wall all the way down like a TD .049.
I have a adapter for a tuned pipe may have to bench test it seems to have better flow than
using a cox muffler interface. The weather is warmer today but tad breezy and solid cloud cover
not so great for testing a new plane

Re: Cox .01 /.02 /.05 /.09 /.15 Speed Planes
Took the NANO III out to the flying field today for a maiden flight.
At launch static 4x5 carbon blend prop 24,376 rpm
Idle was good enough around 7,600
Static 6.9oz of thrust .133hp / 99.22w / 116 mph pitch speed
The colors really pop outside
Anyone want to guess how fast a stock TD RC .050 can unload to with the above field specs?

good photos Brad!, it looks very good to the model!
mmmm , regarding your question, I'm going to shoot in the air ... let's say 225 km / hs? about 140 mph?

Re: Cox .01 /.02 /.05 /.09 /.15 Speed Planes
Thank you Mauricio,
Good calculated estimate, 140 mph would require the prop to unload to 29,568 rpm
The Lil Speedy without exhaust pressure ran with a 4.1x4.1 static 24,790 rpm and unloaded
to 30,492 rpm 118.4mph with no pressure line to the fuel tank and no Nelson plug.
The Nano III static 4x5 at 24,346 rpm shows just what a pressure tap / Nelson plug will
do to help boost static rpm nearly matched the rpm of the 4.1x4.1 prop / exhaust sleeve.
The last recorded record speed of a Cox TD .049 was done with a custom mod cylinder
venturi and fabricated tuned pipe and is in the RC 1/2A speed record books at 112 mph.
These recorded results are no longer done these days.
Today we can run with thinner airfoils lower weight RC gear and more choices in props.
These props can be modified to improve top end speed. I have a modified APC 4.75x5.5
I have reduced to 4.24x5.5 reshaped the prop tips and put enough back cut to mimic
the blade width of a 4.2x4. The 5.5 pitch will hit 140 mph at 26,880 rpm / 150 at 28.8k rpm
that's 241.4 kmh with a simple Cox Tee Dee engine!
I will test a carbon / nylon 3.8x5 first for top rpm then the modified APC prop.
See pic for comparison of the next two props to be tested.
I hope to hit 150 mph / 31.7k with the carbon prop, if it does I will narrow the APC a bit
more and shoot for 160 / 30.7k

I will send him a email to get an update at lunch for the aluminum back plates.
The last of the TD .010 runs the case was not anodized to save cost and the extra
step hence the black plastic.

Re: Cox .01 /.02 /.05 /.09 /.15 Speed Planes
Mauricio you where close here is the data see pic!
The plane was up high on the first flight but was able to get a read on the rpm.
Broke the prop shown on the landing cross wind it was rough out gusty and shifting
winds so stopped after the first flight, didn't want to risk it. Once I get use to the plane
and have some good up close passes on vid will post.
2.7g as shown on the prop balancer it was a Flyzone 5x5 nylon / glass mix.

Hoooo friend almost almost give in the center! .... I'm glad to know that my instinct gave me a very close data!
How good all the information that you leave here Brad!
I imagine that the desire to fly and test was beyond the weather ... I hope that soon you have good time to do the tests with more comfort.
I remain attentive to your advances my friend!
Yes!!! Green for your fight against the weather!

Lol yes very close 138.8mph is what was calculated very close estimate! Thank you for the greenie!
I really pushed my chances, sunny day but very breezy from the North winds the plane is light for
it's wing span. Today my city was hit with a ice storm, I hope the weather improves for the weekend
if so will try again.

Update on the backplates word is he hopes to finish out a product request order
by this weekend and will launch the link for the backplates next week. The batch
runs have been done he just needs time for packaging and setting up the link.

Re: Cox .01 /.02 /.05 /.09 /.15 Speed Planes
These may be a good choice for speed with the TD .020
3 blade 3x5.6 with a 5.6 pitch if static: 25,500 rpm 135 mph.
TD .020 Flight tested a 3030 all carbon prop:
Best Static 30,684 / 87.2 mph / Per Prop Calc.
Static at launch 29,985 rpm / best pass 37,304 rpm /106 mph
Doppler Readings - Carbon 3030 best pass 106.48 mph
I bought some of the purple ones to try

Re: Cox .01 /.02 /.05 /.09 /.15 Speed Planes
APC had made a new prop from a new type of composite material.
It has a apparent weave with impregnated nylon producing a very
thin flexible prop with their typical robust blade to hub connection
which has a thinner airfoil similar to the carbon blend prop they sell.
The 5.1x5 prop is 2.8g in stock form I have modified the prop to
4.44x5N / 2.5g the reduction has improved the stiffness for 1/2A
use. To compare the APC gray 4.5x4 is 4.1g the lower weight of the
new prop will improve top end unloaded rpm.

I need to flight test it for suitably will post results soon as the
weather / time allows. Modified to 4.44x5N should yield unlimited
vertical with speeds over 130 mph.
To go around 165 km/h:
If you want a known tested prop then this ridged IC prop will
suit your needs for speed a 4.5x4
https://www.apcprop.com/product/4-5x4/
There is another IC prop which may be worth trying it is new.
I have not tested one yet but looks to make better thrust
due to blade shape while keeping the rpm up:
