Re: How does your Garden Grow
Up here in the 62nd Latitude the Spring has barely begun
My wife planted some bell pepper, chili, lots of different tomatoes, some cucumber and what not a couple of months ago and has been tending them since. I made a little rope-shelf-thing to the spare room’s window that faces South-East and we got some LED plant lights too. The shelf quickly got too small as the plants grew and were moved to bigger and bigger pots
They will soon be moved outside to the greenhouse that we got last summer. It was delivered in August, my son and I assembled it right away, but was too late to actually grow anything there. We did move the peppers and tomatoes from the veranda there to extend the growth period. I’ll need to build some stands and shelves in there next week.

This one neighbor likes tall grass and weeds.
It is tough to have a nice lawn when your neighbor has other ideas.
Mows the lawn once a month and takes all day to do it.
Last year watched as he blew-up the lawnmower -- billowing out burning oily smoke and kept running the mower until it quit.
The poor neighbor that I take care if her (Nicki) yard has had massive weeds in her yard, and a grass fungus that started over in her neighbor's yard and she paid $1200 to treat the problem that was creeping into her yard from the neighbor's yard because grass he cuts he just leave the clumps of grass and it becomes mold and mildew and lets the fungus grows.
I find it interesting to watch maple trees growing out of the gutters in mid-June that are about 18" tall.
Not the most like neighbor on the street (parties starting at 10:00pm at night.)
Intimidates the older (seniors) neighbors on the street.
Ethnicity has nothing to do with it either. (Hispanic)

Re: How does your Garden Grow
Thanks, Bob, actually we tend our garden ourselves. My scope is mowing, and keeping the irrigation pump alive..we use soil water only, and it has some dissolved salts that often precipitates and needs cleaning up the nozzles and piping. We also add seasonal fertilizers.

Re: How does your Garden Grow
Hi sosam117,
The rule here is you have to cut 'grass' when it is 2ft tall for some reason.
Most gardens here are almost like baloghs beautiful garden.
Some people do not like yellow dandylions on green lawns.
Best one I have seen here yet...
Native grasses you can wade a path through, smell flowers on the way.
Just take a hand scythe with you. to keep to the 2ft limit.
Zero need for mowing.
And birds and bees like it.
(I fly model airplanes because I like birds and bees, for some reason)
I like that.
Thanks CEF,
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Re: How does your Garden Grow
Despite the early start to spring this year, my garden has been slow to grow. The sunflowers are taking their time, dahlias are still short... On the patio, the tomatoes and peppers are still behind that of previous years. The raspberries, both red ever-bearing and the Blackcap (aka: Blue Raspberries), are doing great though. They've taken over a large part of my garden.
Re: How does your Garden Grow
At least mine isn't the only garden growing slow , just now starting to get a few tomatoes , Roma and Sant Marz been having blossom rot treating that with Cal-Mag then the sprayer took a dump !!! Planted corn twice or 3 times now finally starting to pop up .. cucumbers 2nd time planting the ones from pots died when it hit 90F Hot peppers and bells working it ,Basil ,mint out the wy-zoo Beans = 1 mess then stopped now growing again weird year !

Eric , I saw somewhere, where if you crush up a tums and put it around your tomatoes, it will stop blossom end rot , haven’t needed to try it yet . Make sense though .

Re: How does your Garden Grow
Thanks! The greenhouse is my wife’s long-time dream.
We had the foundation dug some years ago, when we had a mini excavator hired for other stuff. There’s gravel and styrofoam, then a thin layer of levelin sand, topped with 12x12” concrete pavers. The ground freezes to a couple of feet here every winter, deeper if there’s no snow, hence the styro.
We looked at plastic/aluminium greenhouses, not expensive, but many times they don’t stand the snow buildup, and the cold makes some plastics brittle. The one our neighbour got, fell apart during the first winter. Because of the dogs we need safety glass, and with all these things considered, the wood-frame didn’t cost too much extra. The spot was selected so that the outdoor water tap is close, and the electricity was easy to arrange too. Plus it blocks the view from the neighbour’s yard to our deck
My wife hesitated first, but I persuaded her to find a nice one, and we finally ordered it last summer. She absolutely loves working in there She does a lot of knitting, reading and such in the wintertime, but had no real summertime hobbies before this, besides general gardening. She’s a teacher, and the summer break is 10 weeks here, so this will give her plenty to do.

Re: How does your Garden Grow
Hi All,
Nice green houses ! Absolutely Beautiful !
(do they come with air conditioning? )
I planted 12 , 4in high different varieties of tomatoes May 20th.
They are going great, and love this hot/humid weather.
No kidding, chest high in a month, and starting to fruit.
The 'non Winter' here was just weird, but,
Ripe tomatoes here in July will be even weirder...
Sun Ripe tomatoes from the vine,
Are worth it.
(no disrespect to other vegetables/fruits )
Take care,
Have fun,
And mulch...
Dave

Re: How does your Garden Grow
My mother planted a large garden every year in the back yard down over the banking to the flood plain of the Lamprey river. She always "Planted some for the bugs and some for the critters" we got what was left.
Stakes and chicken wire are the only answers. Mark has them around the fruit trees that he has planted here as the deer love the leaves otherwise they will strip them bare over-night.
Ah.........Eric is thinking -- Venison.
