Hi everyone,

As promised on my introduction thread for those that have seen it, I am going to start a thread for the cox engine planes I have. This one is for the Hurricane.

it got given to me in a fairly tattered but original box, in pieces. I am guessing my uncles stripped it for one reason or other. Crucially it has the instructions, which enabled me to do a parts check. Everything is complete except the engine mount which seems to have snapped in half, and only half is present, the fuel tank and the aerial has snapped in half. there is also a couple of guns missing. one looks to have snapped flush in the body, but it probably isn't worth trying to drill out unless I somehow sourced some.

I gave it all a clean and it is all I daresay in good shape. there is a lot of glue on the canopy which I need to figure out how to get off without risking breaking it. there is also a couple of marks and rips on the decals, one where the body screw was removed. I am not sure if decals can be obtained for this, and I am always happy to be guided of people here disagree, but I think that being an old warbird, and the unlikeliness of getting it perfect again, a few marks which to me almost look like bullet holes suits it somewhat.

The engine turns, just, but feels pretty gummed up and sticky. it definitely feels like it has compression though I will clean it up and try to get some new gaskets for it. I am not sure whether to try and run it with the glow head on it, or just get a new one given their little cost.

There is also a battery pack, and three leads present. not sure if these are for this, or generic or for the other planes. my knowledge of these little engines is very small, so I will definitely need guiding at times.

last point is, I hope I can get a fuel tank and engine mount? if I can't then the only option I think I would have is to try and 3D print one. I am lucky that my works has one, and I am sure I could sneak it in, but would need the dimensions of it. i would also need to see if 3D print material is fuel proof.

You won't easily find a glow head for that engine, so look after it.  If you can "get a new one at little cost", please let me know where.  I hope you realize that the Cox heads (and all other parts) do not fit this engine.

Also, until you get the spring starter freed up adequately, be very careful as the springs are fragile.  Don't turn it back more than one turn.

Having said that, the variations of that engine are pretty common and complete engines come up for sale pretty regularly, but any spare parts are very difficult to find.

I will second Rods words. Glowheads are different from Cox glowheads, and defnately be careful of the spring. I am speaking from experience.....

Thank you, I didn't realise that these were a lot harder to find parts for so will look after it. I just presumed they would fit so will indeed take a lot of care when cleaning it up - both the spring and head

I suspect that the engine may not be the original, having the Testors name to it. Those who know better may correct me, but I believe the British Keil Kraft models may have used an AM (Allen Mercury) .049 engine, which was basically a Wen Mac manufactured under license. Having said that, your instruction sheet does show the later version Wen Mac/Testors engine with separate glow head. Pictures of the AM .049 that I've found on-line appear to all be the early Wen mac with screw-on cylinder muff.

The Glow head that you will need (if required) can be one from a later Wen Mac, McCoy .049, Testors .049 with cast alloy case, or Testors "Pipe Bomb" plastic/pot-metal version. The heads interchange, although some required thick head gaskets, some thin and some, none at all. You would need to experiment with any replacement.

Nice. I am not familiar with the model but it's a worthy example for a restoration. Don't throw away that box, with a little ingenuity it can be restored to presentable condition.

To remove the canopy glue try an overnight soak in 91% alcohol or Simple Green. Level, just up to the point when the glue stops. Then turn it up and do the backside. Use your fingernail to get the stubbon parts off.

I like the four-way wrench.
