My pal used to have a Space Bug Jr Hop-up kit that was from Cox. He told me it had a bigger venturi and dual bypass, plus a 302 high compression head...but my memory may be a bit dim. Anyone here have one they can share with us to see what it was?

I got this one at a Swap Meet a long time ago (20 years or so). Unfortunately, it didn't have its instruction sheet.

The "Hop-Up" glowhead (on the left in the photo) does not appear to be any different from the spare sent to me by one of our members (sorry I forgot your name, but it IS still appreciated!). This is assuming that stuff wasn't swapped around before I got the kit.

So, maybe someone here can tell us how the "Hop-Up" came about.

Some info on the Space Bug hop up kit. Never heard of one for Jr. Space Bug came with two intake bypass cylinder.

EX has a Q&A sheet that mentions the kit

Thanks guys. That is the kit I remember, but was mistaken about the cylinder. The tank does have a bored venturi, notice the directions tell you to open the needle valve 2 extra turns due to that. The high compression head is tricky because depending on how much nitro you use, it may require extra gaskets, or possibly using the low compression head. Weather and air density has an effect also.

I talked with one of my friends who worked with me at Cox, and he verified that the first batch of Space Bugs did come with standard short glow plugs. Cox found that there was too much variation in different brands of glow plugs that affected the engine performance so they decided to make their own plugs, and then glow heads to ensure repeatable engine performance.

Had I not worked at Cox in customer service, I would have never known about the "Bug" series of engines or the RR-1. Dale Kirn designed the RR-1 and I still have a faded copy of the blueprint for one that he gave me.
