Cox Engine of The Month
Bench performance test of TD 010 engines

Bench performance test of TD 010 engines
For those of you who are confined to your rooms by the severe winter snowfall (especially that in the US) here is an article about the bench test of TD010 engines done in the frame of a Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, USA
https://drum.lib.umd.edu/bitstream/handle/1903/4216/umi-umd-4031.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y
Long and interesting paper full of theoretical approaches (what else should a thesis be based upon?) where the engine speed never exceeded 20k...obviously due to the fact that while the load on the shaft was variable from almost zero upwards, the poor TD010 was dressed up with so many instruments to measure operating parameters, that it is a simple wonder that they could run it at least around 18k or so. As a consequence the brake horsepower they measured is nowhere near the actual one generated by TD010-s around 27+k rpm.
Chief culprit in killing the TD010 output, in my opinion, was the long and narrow air intake duct for engine air-intake measurement that must have throttled the poor thing without the testers being aware of how sensitive this little engine to throttling is.
I wish good reading to those of you who are interested (and patient enough)..

Re: Bench performance test of TD 010 engines
I skipped the theoretical stuff and flipped through to the evaluation section. Then compared their results with what has been known about the 010 performance and realized the bench test cannot be reliable on such a small engine.
When attending university in the early 1980-s I also planned to build a small hydraulic brake at the Dept. Of ICE-s for my 049 but the plans were finally abandoned. In retrospect I think those tests would also have failed.

Whooh! We better e-mail a copy of this to Steven! I lost interest and comprehension of mathematics when they started substituting Letters in place of Numbers in high school. Yeah, I read thru this Thesis like an old playboy magazine, scan the articles and looked at all the pretty pictures!! Yup, it’s nice to know there are the kind of people who work out all the fine details as to why something works, or doesn’t work, like having the proper tension on the prop driver and shaft to maintain a seal on the tiny 010. It’s fun to read and see the projects and tests he (they) set up to measure the TD010 in various configurations and comparisons. Maybe, if I read through it a few times I might understand more of the results presented. I know I’ve learned “How” they work, and have had plenty of fun and enjoyment just knowing that!
Thanks for posting this, I really like the pictures!

I love running TD .010s but there is NO WAY I'm reading all of that! Guess I'm a lightweight enthusiast.

Sure lots of patience is required even for reading only the concluding parts. This is a university thesis that is not too fascinating.
