My weekend so far: FIAT G.50
Hello,
I started my weekend early this week - from Thursday afternoon until now I've managed to get quite a lot done (also have the horizontal stab and elevator that didn't make it into any photo):
I kind of like the way the Sure Start sits in its fish tank.
I apologise in advance for this build being kind of boring, but I will be using the same proven methods I usually do in these builds, so it's really nothing out of the ordinary, just another airframe getting ready for the season (and I am going to need it, I went through a LOT of airframes last season).
Wingspan is going to be around 75cm, weight hopefully just over 200g.

The wing root looks complicated. Is it sheeted at the front?
I enjoy looking at builds.

Yes, it is sheeted. It's not really that complicated, I will post a picture of the inside tomorrow.
This wing construction is a bit labour-intensive though, I have put around 5h into just the wing until now, and that excludes plan drawing.

Re: My weekend so far: FIAT G.50
Build threads are never boring. I love 'em. There's nothing more beautiful to me than a balsa bird in the bones.
There's usually a trick or two in there that I put to use too. I actually prefer building to flying. A lot of the flying I do is really just the final step in the build, proof of concept you might say. That said, I've never posted a build thread. Guess I ought to start.
Keep it coming Dirk. Looks great so far. Love that wingtip!

A $0.70 bottle of bathing salts.
The salts go straight to the toilet, but the bottle is really nice, thin, light and just about the right size. Used the same type of bottle for my Fokker.

Replicating that nose section is not easy. Can't wait to see the final product.

Re: My weekend so far: FIAT G.50
Thanks, guys.
I covered the fuse and the tail yesterday. A long time ago I bought tissue in five colours: green, sky, yellow, black and navy. I had already used all colours but the last one on other builds and I had been dying to try out the navy one as well, and the Croatian Fiat seemed like a great candidate.
Things didn't go to plan though. It turned out, the dye in the navy tissue runs when touched by stick glue. It's not a problem I had with any of the other colours from that supplier (or any other supplier, for that matter). The tissue went on fine in terms of not being wrinkled, but it's all covered in glue smears. Even in the places where the glue touched the tissue only on the underside, the smears and discoloration are visible from the outer side.
I bought a can of sapphire spraypaint to paint the engine cowling, but it seems I'll be spraying the whole thing. Photos to come.

I was curious...love me some Google
Poznań is a city on the Warta River in western Poland. It’s known for universities as well as its old town, with Renaissance-style buildings in Old Market Square. Poznań Town Hall houses the Historical Museum of Poznań, with exhibits on the city. The town hall's clock features mechanical goats that butt heads at noon. The Gothic and baroque Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral is built on an island called Ostrów Tumski.

Poznań is also the city in which Poland's oldest flying club is. It was founded in the early 20s, right after the war. Both us modellers and full-scalers fly there.
Sadly, the airplanes were bothering the residents of a nearby village, and the club was forced to sell the airfield to a property developer. This season will be the last one on the airfield. Now the nearby villagers will have skyscrapers ocluding their view of the sky, hope they will consider that a change for the better.

Re: My weekend so far: FIAT G.50
Really nice work on an out of the ordinary model. Your building is excellent.
I fully understand your frustration with the tissue. I bought some "no run" tissue with the intention of using it over mylar. The color didn't run, but the tissue puckered up and almost fell apart when dampened. Most of the puckers flattened out when it dried, but I still was not satisfied with the overall result.

That is a nice covering job. The last blue tissue I used, I applied wet and it tore itself apart when shrinking. It is difficult to get decent tissue these days especially the coloured variety.

Re: My weekend so far: FIAT G.50
Do you think I should cut out a vent in the cowling in front of the cylinder to let the air get it for engine cooling?

Re: My weekend so far: FIAT G.50
I think I would do so seeing as the head isn't going to be in the airstream. It doesn't look like it would interfere with the appearance that much, especially if you paint the inside of the engine compartment too. A half inch hole should probably be enough. Looks like plenty of room for air to get out.
The old rule of thumb is to have twice the area for outlet as you you have for inlet
It's looking really nice! That blue is perfect. Keep up the good work.

The opening you have made looks more than adequate for cooling and I wouldn't advise cutting an opening in the front but leave air to flow cleanly around it.
However, there may be an issue with exhaust residue collecting in the bottom of the cowling. It may be an idea to put a "scoop" at the bottom of the cowl to encourage air to flow upwards and drain off residue.
