Stuka Challenge
With all the threads on this site about the infamous Cox Stuka, it got me reminiscing about the day way back when I Figured 9 a new Stuka into the pavement quite abruptly and unexpectedly. After all, how could that happen since I was the control line pilot expert that my buddies thought was great, or at least I thought so. I do remember that the elevator on the Stuka not as responsive as the PT 19 trainer. Well, parts were gathered during the walk of shame and were put away into the box of forgotten interest.
Over the winter, I found the box of yesteryear fun and this is part of what i found:
Hmmmm, she could be re-built as I pondered the remains of the carcass. Gathered some old parts like the red bomb and new parts such as a single vented tank, a muffler as some added bling along with some new decals. While studying the details of the blow molded injection pilots supplied with the model, I was quite amazed at the detail within each piece. So much so that I thought...what the heck. It's a model that could always be changed back for the purists. Probably all of these Cox items will be listed between .05-.25 cents during a liquidation sale upon my demise. Oh well, why not enjoy some of what the model offers?
For instance, here is the pilot before and after painting:
and the Gunner:
I know...too shiney for a model, but this is how I rolled back in the 60-70's when painting models with Testors enamel. Oh...what the heck, may as well paint the seat and equipment within the cockpit also:
Now it's time to stop when ahead, and assemble the model. While attending undergraduate school in Milwaukee many moons ago, I remember students with bumper stickers that read: "Honk if you passed P. Chem". Putting this model back together yielded some colorful language while reminiscing about the difficulty of chemistry analogous with assembly of this model. How in the world did this model ever get assembled via employees at a cost productive time? Maybe Cox Forum Members should have a bumper sticker produced that states: Honk, If You Assembled a Cox Stuka."
Eventually success was achieved. I sincerely appreciate those that have had the confidence to fly this Stuka, for this one will probably remain as a static model. Thanks for reading.

OhBee, Check the major auction site. Eventually the parts that one needs usually appear.

That is beautiful! Very very well done! Your detailed painting of the pilots adds so much to the overall impression.
It’s a labor of love restoration to make the model look as good as the Box Art does.

Here was part of my problem with this challenge. I read the following: you know, "the Slippery Slope."
Well since the starboard fuselage on the later models came enlarged without the knockout plug, then what the heck and go ahead and add a muffler for a little extra personal bling appeal. Problem was that I needed to rob Peter to pay Paul from another cylinder and piston combo for proper muffler installation.
Then the instructions made the suggestion of painting the pilot and gunner and the rest is history.

Guys, these comments are what make this an enjoyable experience and camaraderie that other personal friends just don't quite understand.
rsv1cox wrote:Wow Doc, you shame me with some of my amateur restorations. Beautiful work and featured display worthy. Reflects hard work and dedication.
Yours was in much worse shape than mine was when I started.
Still love the thing though.

Hey Bob...who do you think gave me some of the inspiration? Keep it up. Thanks.

Re: Stuka Challenge
If you painted the gun, antenna and exhaust stack it would really round out your work. Excellent job with the pilots. You have quite the steady hand.

Re: Stuka Challenge
As was said many times above. Amazing work. I cannot imagine the time and patience to paint the pilots, seats, and cockpit details. Overall, I too personally like the shiny look. Thanks for sharing with us.
