Tricking out my den room
With a couple of Cox tether cars coming, something has to go or be rearrainged.
L1 Bird-dog got hung on a string beneath the propeller, Cox powered Hollow log F-100 presently sitting on the chair will go on the right side of the propeller at the same incoming angle as the P-38 Schematic. Yellow Bipe has to go to the loft. Ike and Mike tri-motors stay. New tethers go on top of the display case.
Added a framed patch from Amelia Earharts Lockheed Vega and pictures of the wounded B-17 painting made famous in the book "A Higher Call." Perhaps the most compelling story that came out of WW-2. German Ace did not shoot the flak damaged B-17 down, instead escorted it back over the channel. Reunited with the B-17's crew years later. B-17 pilot was Charlie Brown of West Virginia.

Definately some neat stuff there Bob. And some great stories for sure. Now off to do a search about that B-17 mission you mentioned.

Sorry for taking away from you thread Bob, but just thought I would share a brief short history of the events of the B-17 found online.

Re: Tricking out my den room
Funny story.
I read every day, from Donald Duck to Steven Hawking and have for about eighty years. Mom was a school teacher and would read to me evenings. Started me. Library visits yielded Tom Swift and the Hardy Boys Mysteries among others.
I have bookcases full spread out over the house. Last week I came across an article about A Higher Call and thought I had read it but couldn't find it anywhere. Talked to my daughter in law about it, and she said that we had read it together. But I can't find it, if I had read it I would have a copy. So I ordered one from Amazon.
Then I thought, the only place I haven't looked was the Secretary where I keep "special" books.
Sure enough.
Sent my DIL these pictures.
So I have a spare, if anyone is interested, PM me. Free, shipping included.

Re: Tricking out my den room
reading - every day.
when my son was born, my now ex and I decided we would read to him evey night, no matter what - to instill a love of books, reading and vocabulary. we started with picture books, then 'kids' books, Dr. Suess evolved to longer books..... and so on.
When he got past 'children's books" we would do a chapter or two a night.
She would read him "modern" stuff - I would read him "vintage" stuff
Of course he is a voracious reader, and perfectly capable, but it was a nighttime ritual. Wash face, brush teeth, get in pajamas, lie in bed with alternating parents, read book, say prayers, lights out.
She read him Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, etc
I read him Tom Swift, Hardy Boys, Bomba the Jungle Boy - etc
we learned, anything recently published or re-published has been heavily edited and dumbed down. So we read the old, the first editions, the second hand bookshop finds....
then it happened, about mid-last-year. 14. and he said. "dad, I love you and mom reading to me, but I think I am too old for that now. We wll change the night ritual, and I will read to myself for 30 minutes"
I was heartboken, but thrilled at the same time. Our reading was a success, he devours books.
Lately, he has been "sneaking" around to stay under the covers with a flashlight reading AFTER the designated lights out. And? he has not figured out who makes sure there are alwasy fresh batteries in the flashlight!!
it goes fast, enjoy it

Re: Tricking out my den room
Too funny about the book there. Always seems to be the last place you look, or find it when not looking for it. I am sure it would be a very good book, but I can honestly say I have not read a book since I was in school unfortunately. I did have intentions of picking up a book a few times in the past, but had just never done so. Even now, I keep thinking it would be a lot better than sitting on my tablet till I go to sleep.
But a question on the book. Is it a story, such as a novel, or is it more or less a biography detailing the events of the aircrewmen involved?

True story Chancey. Book details it all. Paperback copies on the internet for as little as $3.50 USD.
From the books over-leaf.

Re: Tricking out my den room
Lots of good reading there Bob! Another great airplane related read is "Fate is the Hunter" by Ernest K Gann. One of the forum flyers was talking about a recent crash of a model and refered to it as a "ground loving bitch" I responded with I'm gonna name my next plane that! He said he could't take credit for the nick name as it came from Gann in his book:

Re: Tricking out my den room
Thanks Bob. I did find a couple pages of it on Amazon. It does appear very interesting, and may spark an interest in reading. The part about having a 'Get out of jail free card' by the doctor gave me a little chuckle. I saw them on Amazon here and my better half just asked what I wanted for Christmas.... Now I have an idea for her! Thanks for the help. The paperbacks are about $17 here, and will be fine with that. Problem is though, I will have to wait now.....

Wow Rene, a whole book? Took awhile to load, thought I was going to get just a single page. Going to dedicate some time to that.
Jingle Bells Chancey.

AND I forgot to mention
GREAT DEN!
We need more dens, with books
and less (@^ "man caves" with artifically purchased 'experences'
Dens inspre youth. (even some of us OLD youth)
Man Caves are just a crappy place with beer posters to pretend we were cool once.
BOOKS! PLANES! Engneering!
gosh I am a dork

Now that cstatman mentioned it near the end of his post.... Besides the amazing books and toys (if we can call them that), your rooms remind me of a movie with an actor gone way too early. John Candy. That movie was Planes, Trains, And Automobiles.....

A family favorite Chancey, my son and his wife run it every Christmas without fail.
Big house with four bedrooms plus. One bedroom houses my model train layout, one small section of the downstairs family room has a display case and hanging from the ceiling and wall planes, and my den. Otherwise the rest of the house is "normal."
Oh yeah, the loft above the garage. Pretty much stuffed but I like to think - organized.
Agreed about Candy. Bill Murray too in Stripes with Candy. Murray in "Monuments Men" - perfect.

On a 'Candy' note. He came here to Winnipeg on occasionally to a local restaurant, Alicia's, for perogies. As well, he had them shipped to his filming locations as well. Just a funny side note.
