Todays Experiment With Dope.....

Todays Experiment With Dope.....
So, I do not really know how to start this, so here it goes.... I had happened to go through a couple small cans of dope I have here last night. I then see my small can of black Sig dope and open it. To my horror, I see it kinda all lumpy and curdled. Well, this was no good. So today after dinner, I was at my parents and told my dad I had something to do in HIS garage. We go out there and I start the experiment of saving my dope. First I add a small bit of thinner to the dope as I know I have to thin it out. Then I put my homemade 'stirrer' into HIS drill. Carefully, I insert my stirrer into the can and after a few seconds, it breaks. No problem, just a pride thing. Then he says to just chuck up an allen key. Well, I had thought about that yesterday too, but disregarded that idea, until he mentioned it. So now, here I am, drill going slow with the allen bit in it, stirring up my BLACK dope. This is being done on his workbench that he somewhat recently painted WHITE. Along with a couple totes of his 'junks' he is currently sorthing through. Anyways, I got the hang of the allen key mixer, so I go a bit faster, then a bit more. Early on, I said I wanted to make a cardboard shield with a hole in it just in case anything spit out, to which he replied I couldn't see what I was doing. Well, the small can suddenly got a high speed wobble, the key was rattling off the side of the can, and I am sure you can see where this is going. There is now a circular pattern of 'art' all over his table, his totes, my hand I was holding the can with was now black, my watch, and the sleeve of my jacket at the end! I proceeded to say that I wanted to put a cover on it! All he did was look at his table. Lol. So I scraped up as much as I could, put it back into the can, added some more thinner with a new homemade mixer consisting of 2 small zip ties on a long shank driver bit. Final result is that the lumps are mostlty gone, 95% better, but still thick, so we will go for round two tomorrow and thin it out a bit more. I am not using this for anything important, but rather just to coat fuel tank areas and firewalls. Of course, I will test it on scraps before using it on something good.

My son is at the stage where he steals my tools, and doesn't return them..
Secretly,
I cant wait till he comes over and destroys my garage doing the same sort of thing.
I love my son more than he will ever understand, and we only have so many days on this rock.

Re: Todays Experiment With Dope.....
Well at least no one was hurt in this experiment
I like your idea with the HM drill Stirrer ! I am sure i have some dope that needs attention , Usually i will pour off the good/better of the stuff and try and thin out some of the lumps and what ever comes from that mix with the other and go from there throwing the lumps Out .

Re: Todays Experiment With Dope.....
Personally I would have just shook the can with the lid on.
Glad it’s working out for you.

Chancey,
I think you should be able to see my FB profile. I have a dope shaker video showing how a recycled drill can be used to oscillate a bottle of dope suspended between two uprights. I'll try to remember to push it to you tonight.

Re: Todays Experiment With Dope.....
Thanks all for the compliments and replies. As it was as lumpy as it was, I am not honestly sure if shaking or tumbling it would have worked. But.... Not that it is consistant, a good while on the tumbler may be a great idea to make sure it gets a good final mix. But I have a bad feeling I got rid of my old good tumbler.
On another note, I thinned it out a bit more todat and it went great with zero splattering! Off to go see if I still have my rock tumbler.

Re: Todays Experiment With Dope.....
Why not just use dope that's good and works properly? The cost of thinner nowadays is astronomical. I just purchased two qts and it was $55 delivered. I wouldn't waste a drop of it on material that sounds like it's already hardening. I don't even clean my brushes in dope thinner.

Why? Mostly because I like a challenge, I just plan on using it for firewalls and fuel tank areas, and well, I was bored!
I do have a little bit of good dope left here still, but again, I was bored and like a challenge.
