Hi,

I got a 1979 Cox Radio Control Cub Trainer No. 9900. It’s a one channel foam model with a .020 Pee Wee engine and servo integrated in the Rx board. Basically, this is a free flight model with rudder control.

The history behind this model is, my mom bought me one when I was a kid but it arrived broken and was returned. That left a sour taste that I always wanted to satisfy. Never saw one again, until now. Oh my Lord, what a nice and wonderful feeling when I found it!

The model I got has never been flown or started. The radio control system works fine. I’m looking forward to fly it.

Any information about this model will be appreciated.

Thanks for reading the post and hope you enjoyed it!

David

Hi David, welcome to the forum!
You have told us a beautiful story, it is good that you meet the model that somehow marked your childhood, I am very happy.
I don't have a model of these that you show, but surely the guys from the forum will accompany you with information.
Post the progress and even more so if you make it fly! Greetings!

Welcome to the forum, @davehour !

You can do a lot with rudder only. I flew that quite extensively in the 1970's and early 1980's.

Our flying bud, Tony, has a Cub that has been outfitted with rudder, elevator, and throttle.  This footage is from his flights at the S.M.A.L.L. Fly-In (near Little Rock, Arkansas) a few years ago.

Really a sweet-flying little plane, especially on a calm evening!

Good luck with your Cub!!!!

Hello david very nice find I thought I noticed that the elevator seems to have a hinge ? I've never seen one but I think it's possible to convert for two channels and kim has already seen one that would surely make a very good model with two or 3 channels And make the plane easier to steer and drive too The use of a new control would be good because nowadays it is very light, small and powerful with a much larger range. Also its posible To use smaler lipo batry that provide mutch more power I too will be tempted to use it for a while sometimes with the original components but would surely end up with several modifications That's what I did with my ez bee And this plane is much better now I must say I would never go back to the original two channel RC Plane RC Plane Thumbs Up

Hi guys,

I appreciate all that valuable information!

I range tested the model and it passed. I did it in a congested urban area and was impressed it wasn’t affected by nowadays signals.

The model and Tx use alkaline AA’s.

The elevator does have a hinge to make adjustments depending on how the model behaves in flight.

I’ll probably add the model to my Cox collection after some flights, or may fly it occasionally.

Hello guys,

I cleaned the Pee Wee engine. The engine has never been fired, but the piston/rod joint has 0.012”(0.3mm) of play. Can I run the engine or must reset the piston/rod joint?

Thanks.

That seems to be a good amount of play. These smaller engine rev to very high RPM's, the more the play the more the hammering effect because of it.

I always reset the socket joint after every season of flight. When I was doing it, could easily put in about 100 or more flights from late Spring to early Fall. Resetting gave me a good start for the next season.

Since I gather that the engine you have has some time on it, personally, I would reset it. Otherwise, it could possibly fail. Back in the old days, these engines were fairly inexpensive and parts were available, so they were easily maintainable. But now, parts are harder to come by.

It is up to you, but if you do decide to run without reset, I wouldn't be trying to press the engine into extremely high RPM's, i.e., no extra high nitro fuel.

Hi guys,

I finished fixing and restoring the Cox Cub Trainer and it’s ready to fly!
Following a recap of the work done:

-Decals removed, repositioned and their edge sealed with epoxy to prevent peel off.
-Foam filler applied to the fuselage and wing on areas with noticiable slits and marks.
-Fixed the broken rudder horn, and vertical fin glued to the fuselage.
-Main gear re-glued to the fuselage because it was loose.
-Tie wraps ends installed and epoxied to the main gear ends because ends were broken and tires were not hold properly.
-Tail skid added to the fuselage.
-Horizontal stabilizer straightened, glued to the fuselage and reinforced at the center because it was weak due to the creases produced when it was not fixed to the fuselage.
-Wing rubber bands factory protector tape installed.
-CA applied to the dowels to prevent fuel oil soaking.
-CA applied to the engine firewall screws to prevent them from loosening due to the vibrations.
-Rx antenna cleaned, Rx switch and integrated servo pot, Tx switch and pot, cleaned and lubed. Of particular interest, the Cox/Sanwa integrated servo motor uses cooper brushes.
-Engine broken in.

Hey Dave,
Thought you might get a kick out of Tony's Cub, flying at the 2019 S.M.A.L.L. Fly-In, near Little Rock!
