Propellers, so how many do you have?
Roberts "Carving" post got me thinking. I would like to try one, I just lack two things.........skill and ability.
But, I do have propellers, lot's of them. Flea markets, ebay, acclumation. I have counted my engines, but never props. Not all shown here. I have a box of custom props that someone (pretty good at it too) made of of fiberglass and resin, all in weird shapes and sizes. I think he was testing speed props. I sent some to Ken years ago before I understood how pickey he is about his stuff. He was not impressed and I don't think he ever tried one. No blame, they were iffy at best. If I can ever find them I will post a picture.
Anyway, as mentioned Robert got me thinking - My favorite prop. a mess when I got it but it cleaned up well.

Paddles
And more
Cleaning up I found this one. Someone "carved" the heck out of it.

That’s cool Bob!! I like the “Infant “ prop…… Originally for K & B Infant?…. And certainly some very unique props on the ready to fly planes…..Kind of a neat “side” of our model airplanes….Why not focus a little more at it?…. It’s what makes them go!…I just wanted to learn something new and maybe be able to tune the prop to the plane a little better….. Worked out OK with balsa props on rubber FF…..I know the wood props will break easier but do intend to fly ‘em when I get a chance ….

The Infant prop is for the .020 . I have the K&B Infant and it offers the power of a fart. I think I can blow the prop faster. A real quality engine but gutless. Locating plugs for it seem to be incredibly difficult as well. Almost every early designed 1/2A utilizes extremely small shaft diameters. Therefore, using heavier props are probably not such a good idea.

Thanks Robert, Yes, it originally came on this K&B Infant.
When I took it off to clean the engine I lost track of it and went into full panic mode (rare prop). I looked for weeks and couldn't find it. I looked everywhere! Hiding in plain sight. One day I just happened to pick up the Wen Mac Aeromite and there it was.
Another favorite:
People love to clip them
When I get a engine with a prop I usually keep them together.

Infant prop
I read somewhere that the Infant came with a metal prop that was promptly banned by the AMA. Any truth to that story?

Re: Propellers, so how many do you have?
All I remember about the Infants props is that the engines were ready to release before a suitable one was available…. And a metal one was sort of a quick fix….. Maybe the wood prop that you have Bob was a little later while they were still popular…. Still a rare bird I would think…. I was looking at an Infant on the bay a while back and it still had its instructions including how to make a prop for it so I took a screenshot just ‘cause it was interesting….I’m guessing this was probably before a commercial prop was available…

Neat propeller. Really like teh square tips. Upon my first quick glance, I for some reason, thought it a free-flight prop. However, I do not know why, other than a quick glance at how it 'twists' immediately outboard of teh center hub.

Hi Bob,
That 'Rite Pitch, Super Stunt' square tipped prop is cool.
1, 8 is stamped on the hub.
An 8-1?

Re: Propellers, so how many do you have?
I own a few Rite Pitch props. They're certainly old and my decals on the blades are not as nice as Bob's example. One thing that strikes me is the Super Stunt on that prop. All of mine say speed. For the life of me, I can't figure out the reasoning that one would use a 8 pitch prop for stunt. Most ignition engines of the time utilized higher pitch props but they're diameter was also large as well. For instance, I can see a OK Super .60 swinging the 11-8 because it would allow some rpm's with the 8 pitch holding it back from self destructing itself. Most .60 ignition engine were swinging almost 14" props. The OK Super .60 though was far from being OK and it was hardly Super.

When I first saw that propeller Andrew, I thought "Master Airscrew." Their model propellers are so different from traditional model airplane propellers, much more scale-like. I have ran them but never done a comparison between the two. Wonder if anyone has?

Re: Propellers, so how many do you have?
A 5x3 wood a bit too much prop for the K&B .020 Infant?
If the engine develops its BHP at a lower RPM, then it could be the right prop. The Infant predated the Cox .020 Pee Wee, which when it debuted, outdid some of the earlier larger engines, .049's in power. The Pee Wee made 1/4-A R/C possible.
I envision the Infant mounted to a smaller lightweight sheet balsa or stick and tissue free flight aircraft. Like any engine, matched up to the right airframe, it will perform. It is just not a competitive performer along side a Pee Wee.
Had to re-read this thread to get the context. The Infant prop that was banned, I think it was made of metal. I believe it was AMA's safety code that banned metal prop use, apparently too many hand injuries.

Hi Andrew,
That agWagon must have some serious HP !
Do they paint the tips white, to make sure they do not hit the crops?
Master Airscrew props are really good.
APC/others, did not make any performance difference, other than looking cool.
Got a dozen MA 9-4s, fresh 15% fuel from the LHS. Good to go.
As a CD, I would collect busted props, and make an end of season 'Best/Worst Midair Award'.
This was .25 r/c scale combat here, years ago.
Your results may vary,
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

The Infant uses a metal radial mount. I think you could mount it to a paper airplane. It might fly it. You wouldn't have to worry about the screws ripping out of the paper.

Hi gg,
r.e the 11/8...
I looked at the how to carve an Infant prop text, and assumed it was on the 8in width of an 11X8 piece of paper.
The chart was rotated 90deg. Makes sense now !
I like learning things here on CEF...
