Who put the "I" in I phone

Who put the "I" in I phone
Well, I guess it was Steve Jobs back in 2007. He sure didn't put ME into it.
I'm sure that you all love your's. I go to the dentist, everybody in the waiting room has their eyes glued to the thing, barber shops too. Heads down deep in thought. No conversation, No "How about that Nancy Pelosi." Quiet, nothing, NADA Zilch! Makes me ill!
A couple of weeks ago my old flip phone died. Probably due to neglect. I only used it in case I had a flat tire or something similar to call AAA. Safety feature. Never happened. I change flats myself, if I ever had one.
So, my son took it to the Apple store for renewal. I don't talk their language. Seems I let my subscription lapse and they won't renew it. No problem, "I'll just put you on our family plan." So, last week son gave me this thing that looks like a pack of cards that has been run over by a road compactor, thin and stretched.
So after a three minute introduction to "Smart phones" (which I pay no attention to) my son turned me loose. My son came over the other day and found the phone discharged, seems current drains happens on or off. I could leave my flip phone turned off for many days without discharging. So he charged it up.
So, the other day I was away from my land line and wanted to call my daughter but I had the I phone. Punched a button and up comes something that I don't understand. Punched the button again and up comes the weather. Still looking for the phone icon I punched/sweeped begged the button again. Up comes the news. I don't want the %$#&^ news I want to make a phone call. Punched the button again and found the list of contacts that my son had put in.
Hit my daughters name no phone icon but text. Hit text and up appears a tiny alpha/numeric screen with figures so small I could hardly read them. Tried and came up with pot opan and no "send" option. My shakey hands!!!!!
Had it! Talk about a "Fox Hurl!"
Talked (complained) to my son about it today, which I'm afraid upset him no end. He sincerely tries to help............but in some regards I'm beyond that consideration. Some technology passes me by. The "I" phone is one of them. I do not like the thing, and I'm a little proud of it.
Following the crowd is something that I have never been accused of. Even when the crowd is on the right side of history.

Re: Who put the "I" in I phone
I find the CEF cellular version handy. I get notice in my E-mail of a reply, it automatically brings up that version when I click on the link. In replies, have memorized most of the key emojis, so I don't have to resort to the menu.
Still prefer the desktop version when home. It allows me to "like" a post, whereas the cellular version doesn't have this unless you opt for the full version on cellular. But the CEF one is most clean and easy to view on the small cellular screen.
And, this blasted Android phone makes it so hard for me to terminate voicemail when someone recognized you tried to call, then calls you back whilst in voicemail mode.
I try to cancel voicemail, it terminates my active call instead. Plus, it randomly brings up scribble screen mode when I least want it. I just want it to do what I want it to do, but has a mind of its own.
I'd be all in favor of bringing back pay phones and carrying a wad of change in my pocket for calls.
We need a cellphone similar to Echo for seniors.

No, no, no, no, no, no, Jacob.........I spend way too much time on the forum as it is. Not that I don't enjoy it, it's one of the highlights of my day. Nothing I like better than kicking the tires here and seeing what everyone is getting into. But, I have work to do and it does not get done unless eye do it............
I enjoyed the cartoons guys and not to far off the mark. I'm a lost puppy when it comes to "I" phones.

not that I like new things. I like simple things
the Jitterbug by Lively is a very simple phone. - with much less BS
https://www.lively.com/phones/
Also, there was a brilliant animated short from Steve Cutts on just your argument against 'smart' phones

Re: Who put the "I" in I phone
Hi All,
I plugged my rotary phone back in, it does not work...
DAMN ! ! !
I'll have to go to the post office to get stamps/envelopes/etc. to complain...
DAMN ! ! !
I cannot find an address, nor, anyone to complain to...
DAMN ! ! !
I learn Email that no one responds to...
DAMN ! ! !
I-phone? Are you kidding me?
It should be a Me-phone...
Humour and laughs inserted here.
Thanks CEF forum,
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Re: Who put the "I" in I phone
Thanks Charles and Dave.
I see the Jitterbug Flip phone is $49.99 plus tax, + plan, + fee's......yada yada.
My son has me on his "Family Plan"........costs me nothing for that flattened deck of cards. One day I will take the time to get aquainted with it. Right after I finish my PHd in how to stay calm in stressful times...................

Probably best to get into building another airplane Robert.. You said you were going to do that before you finished the P38. You were thinking about building another one. Having just finished one.. another would go together like Lightning.........

I remember that skit.
Bob, have your son go through the settings on your phone and remove/disable as much of the extra nonsense as possible. That so your main screen is largely clear without anything to accidentally open. Disable Siri and other touch commands.
You could go even further and have your son set this up for you:
https://support.apple.com/guide/assistive-access-iphone/about-assistive-access-iphb86e84e2b/ios
If you still cannot get used to it, they still make basic "dumb phones" that you should be able to swap on your existing plan.
Re: Who put the "I" in I phone
Thanks Jacob.
I'll get used to it, like I got used to hitting my thumb with a hammer. My son gave me another 30 second lesson yesterday. It seems you can't shut the darned thing off. The reason I guess that my daughters keep theirs plugged in all the time. I don't like that.
My old flip phone, you flip it and it comes on. No code to punch in............my birth year if anyone finds it in your local landfill.
Bob - The only guy at the barber shop with his head up.

Re: Who put the "I" in I phone
Interesting short video, done in the pre-WW2 cartoon style. Yes, too many people have their noses buried in the phone screen these days. Even the laws against driver distracted use in vehicles seems to do little to stop use, see it all the time.cstatman wrote:Also, there was a brilliant animated short from Steve Cutts on just your argument against 'smart' phones

Mr. Jacob,
Thanks for the adaptive assistance note. I never knew this existed. Now if I could get my 92 yo FIL to check it out...

Thanks for the "Are you lost" video Charles. I sent it to my kids and a classmate from the 1950's. They will get a kick out of it.
