Organize Your Props !!! Empty Organize Your Props !!!

I figure everybody's got their own method of storing their props...like the time-honored tradition of just "Chucking Them in a Drawer", but thought I'd post my idea for keeping SOME sort of rhyme and reason to them so that I can avoid too much searching during those passionate moments of engine testing!

For a long time, I've used bamboo skewers from Walmart, epoxied into a wooden plank. This LOOKS real official and all, but isn't very efficient for packing them around in your field box, or even storage in the big box at home.

I'm still sliding the props onto bamboo sticks, but in a much more streamlined manner. I assemble them into "units" by sliding them onto the skewer, and keeping them there with a piece of small fuel tubing. This way, I can pick up the whole thing, and quickly determine all the info I need to select a prop. It's also very obvious as to their pitch direction (pusher or tractor), and they will now lay flat in a shallow drawer, taking up much less space, but still being real handy.

While my practice is to put props in Zip-lock plastic bags THEN toss the bags in a drawer. Laughing

And yet another great use for those multi-talented bamboo skewers.

Hello Kim, as I look at those most desirable Tornado black and whites in the picture I loved what I noticed underneath. It looks like your drawing is of the cloverleaf. That made me crack a smile seeing that. In addition, I couldn't not notice the rear rotor K&B Torpedo .40 in your picture. I just finished a formula .40 plane using the ole K&B. I hit 122 mph and the guys helping me said there was absolutely 20 more hidden mph in the plane. Unfortunately, 10% nitro is all that's allowed in competition but for practice I still wake her up and give her a drink of 40% vitamin N. Ken

Hey Ken,

Yeah, one of my continuing goals is to actually perform a recognizable cloverleaf. My mind tends to go to mush as I go through it, so I figured staring at a drawing might burn it into my psyche. My Jetco Shark .15 has a speed management problem that makes it run out of sky on the outsides if I'm not careful. Watching Allen Brickhaus and his buddies crank them out doesn't exactly shore my ego either ! But it WILL eventually happen...got an S-1 Ringmaster patiently waiting for all this engine craziness to ebb !

122 mph is SMOKING in my world! The K&B I've got was in one of those classic "Box of Engines" yard-sale finds from a long time ago. As with most in my stable, it's got a pretty easy life, drinking 10% !

P.S. What plane is your F-1 ?

One piece of advice I can give you in regards to the cloverleaf is to make the maneuvers big. Too many times, flyers choke off the maneuver making it too tight which kills off the needed speed to keep the plane from stalling. In the case of your Shark, it needs all the power it has probably to keep a clean maneuver. I also fly the intersection a bit longer to gain even a bit more speed. Where the clover gets started which should be 45 deg., is probably the most difficult. Getting the entrance correct allows your insides and outsides to appear as they have the proper symmetry. I struggled for months trying to get it correct. Flying over asphalt which we do several times a year makes this even more difficult as you have a tendency to fly your bottoms even higher. I saw Allen this past weekend. Ken
