Thinking Wing Flaps

Post  RK Flyer Sun Jul 28, 2013 12:42 pm

I am looking for a new 1/2 A kit to get back into CL flying and I've seen a few kits that have wing flaps, so I am wondering if any of you have had experience with them & how much they add to 1/2 A Stunt Flying? Airplane

Thanks RK Flyer

Not all larger airplanes have flaps either. They are added complexity, but are intended to improve the maneuverability. I haven't flown with them either.

I have not used them on 1/2A, but I can say they turn the plane with authority on the larger ships.

I am sure they have the effect on 1/2A.

Thinking Re: Wing Flaps

Post  GUS THE I.A. Sun Jul 28, 2013 2:55 pm

I build a lot of stuff, to satisfy my curiosity, and I put flaps on several C/L planes that I "designed". The 1/2A planes loop tighter than prior to the addition of flaps-well, all of them do. I learned that it was a power and speed issue (oh, and experience) that made the planes not perform the way I wanted them to. I put flaps on them, and the response is more immediate to control input. It doesn't make it more difficult to fly, it just 'sharpens' the reaction to control input. The planes I made were kind of ugly, but it was to perform a task. If it flew like I wanted it to, I could use the dimensions, and build a 'good' one. If you can figure a way to install flaps after you fly it in a 'stock' configuration, do that, and determine if you want them or not. I would rather not have the complexity, or weight associated with them, if the plane performs well without them.
That's my two cents, and if I had all the 2 cents that came with the advice I'd been given, I'd have 5 million dollars.

This is the 1/2A full fuse and flapped plane I want to build. Everyone says it's a great stunter. The Pinto!

Thinking Thats the one!

Post  RK Flyer Mon Jul 29, 2013 12:38 am

Flying  Duke, Perfect! Thats the best looking 1/2 A model out there! I am also looking at the Black Hawk "Sky King" with flaps to start learning with!

What size  Cox Engine would you use? I am looking at the Super Bee & Bumble Bee for more power, they both go up to 20,000 RPM.

Thanks for all the fast replys!  RK Flyer

The pinto will be underpowered with a reed engine. A Tee Dee or Medallion are listed as the smallest options.

Phil, I guess I have to do more research on the newer Engines, I was thinging that more RPM (20,000 ) would equal more power. I need to get one in the next couple weeks!

I am working on a Dumas Kit for the "Red Linon Racer", it a rubber powered kit but I am going to beef it up by adding to the wing & body structure and covering the whole plane with Balsa wood 1/16 x 6". I am using 1/8 plywood for the engine firewall the landing gear and bell crank mounts.

Thanks, RK Flyer

The problem with a reed valve isn't so much the power it's their lack of ability to stunt without cutting out due to the integral tank design.

However, we have a member that runs a reed valve on pressure and it works well. It's an option, but with something like the Pinto which was designed around a TD/Medallion it would require modification. By the time you sorted that out it would just be easier/cheaper to use a TD.

My thoughts anyway.

Thinking Wing Flaps

Post  RK Flyer Mon Jul 29, 2013 12:09 pm

Ron & All.......

The Red Lion is moving along and I really need to get an engine for it soon. So I'll move this to a new post about the type of engine I'll need for a 1/2 A Stunt plane. The Pinto is high on that list, I can practice with the Red Lion first.

I have to say that I've been thinking about flying again since I am now retired and its this FORUM that has gotten me started!!

I'll chip in before you start the new engine thread. I agree, if it's designed with the Tee Dee in mind, it will also balance more easily and be tougher than if you build the "optional" radial mount firewall up front. That engine that advertises up to 20k rpm, might just eek it out, but a good running Tee Dee will spool up significantly faster in the air. When a Tee Dee unloads in the air, the scream is significantly higher pitched than it is at it's fastest on the ground.

And a relatively inexpensive new or used Norvel Big Mig .061 is a whole 'nother leap in performance for the same kind of money.

It's all just for fun though, and any way you decide to do it, it will fly.
Rusty

I launch my pressurized reeds at about 18,500 rpm, same as my tee dees. The reeds don't have near the pull as a tee dee in the air though. They don't pull the plane as fast and they bog down significantly more in maneuvers. The tee dees seem much more "tourqey".
