Help! Drive plate Stuck

Post  TopBannana Fri Jul 10, 2015 10:11 am

Ive got a .09 medallion where I'm cleaning and having trouble getting the drive plate off without ruining the parts.

Drive plate Stuck Cox_me10

I am also curious if I polished the crank and the cylinder/piston would it help in performance or decrees the performance.

Last does anyone know if there is a wrench (besides the cox spanner wrenches) that i could use for the medallion

Help! Re: Drive plate Stuck

Remove the drive plate by loosening the carb body retaining nut. As you unscrew the nut, it will butt up on the drive plate and act as a puller taking the drive plate with it, it may take a little effort to pop it loose. if it's extra stubborn you can leave the tension on the drive plate and gently use some heat from a heat gun to help it along careful not to melt the body in the process.
As far as polishing the crank and P/C set I would not try polishing the Piston with the cylinder, it's a precision matched set and any tampering will hurt it's fit ruining the set. Now you can polish the crankshaft to help reduce friction.

Motor looks used and all parts worn in. Polishing is wate of time. Good cleaning/ lube it up should be good to go. Cox wrenck has fitting for lock collar behind thrust washer. Maybe heat will loosen castor and make removal easier. Fireworks

Help! Re: Drive plate Stuck

I've never been a big suppporter of using the lock nut to press off the driveplate. Mostly because it grinds away material as you work the driveplate off.

Not knocking anyones methods or anything. Just there is another way that is less invasive.

Well, two other ways, but one requires a press which not everyone has. So what I do is unscrew the backplate, piston and cylinder lay the back of the crankcase on a hard flat surface, preferably steel. Screw the prop screw back into the crankshaft and carefully tap the head of the screw until the driveplate pops off. It shoudn't require much force to remove it.

I would also dedicate a prop screw to this method of removal as you may marr the head with the hammer. Or you may not, I never do, but it could happen.

http://www.harborfreight.com/1-2-half-ton-arbor-press-3551.html

The above link is what I use. Use hardened cap screws and thread in at least 4 or more turns into the crank then press the crank off of the drive plate. Works best if the arbor press is bolted down to a heavy workbench.
