COX GASSERS arrived today
OVERLORD wrote:This one is for sale over here. I made an enquiry yesterday and sent a mail to the seller but I didn't get any answer so think it's sold already. I don't see a body and the circuit board is said to be damaged but the price is not bad.

Lieven
The seller did write me back!! The car arrived today brought by the postwoman. Well packed, it arrived in one piece and in the original, well "patinated" box. The seller was a bit generous with tape though. The cover is entirely printed en Français. The car was not sold Under the COX name but simply as GASSERS. It was not imported by GRAUPNER as all Cox products for Europe but by AL-ES France.
When I took the lid off, I found the transmitter, the instructions well soaked in fuel, and the necessary Tupperware box with "extras". The car was underneath with body and a repaired spoiler.
In the Tupperware box: the tank, battery box, spanner, another engine with wire mesh cylinder in bits and broken conrod. servo parts, screws, the broken off part of the front bumper and a cutter knife.
Again a nice winter or spring project!!
Lieven
(My wife was not impressed )

I cant believe your wife was not impressed (( She will like it when you get them going and running around , you can let her try it out without too much damage . Good luck on the Get R done factor . getback

Re: COX GASSERS arrived today
The first one looks a bit tatty, it's tru but it is complete with transmitter and the plastic starter thing. I wonder if they will be good off road, or fast, or both. And what about this aleged overheating issue? Maybe a watercooled engine is the solution?

Re: COX GASSERS arrived today
To be honest Lieven, with the 40-60W power that the engine puts out combined with the engine location and that chassis, I think it won't be very fast in today's standards, not very agile on or off road and it will most likely overheat after maybe 10 or 15 minutes.
But seeing what you have done in the past in your previous builds, I expect to be proved wrong
Are you going to restore them to original condition or improve/update them? You can cut several 10's of grams by replacing the rx battery with a LiPo and a BEC, and also play with the weight distribution a little.

Re: COX GASSERS arrived today
The engine certainly can be improved. I dug out the fuel drenched instructions and found the exploded view of the engine with parts list.
It's all very standard according to the part numbers. The cylinder is the single ported one. It's got the standard glow head and a product engine backplate. I don't know what part the exhaust muffler/ throttle is. It's number 20467. Some ideas? The engine doesn't have a ground cylinder with matching sleeve for throttle as for the Jerobee. I didn't find any info about the gear ratio.

What I see is a muffler with a throttle clip on it should rotate on the cyl. and I think set the exhaust defector to the way you want it to go , I have never used one but have a few and have put them on after cleaning up so they will move Eric

Re: COX GASSERS arrived today
I picked up a cox gasser on eBay. The rear tires are melting. They have a strange mounting offset and the size isn't standard. 1/18 tires are a bit big and 1/24 are a bit small even though this is a 1/16 scale car. I may have to 3D print new rear rims for modern replacement 1/18 scale tires.
These may work but would need new rims.

I can see why Cox recalled these cars. They are heavy for the size. Poor cooling and probably really slow based on the gearing.

Re: COX GASSERS arrived today
Great find Jason and for a very reasonable price.
I'm rebuilding one of mine. It's the car pictured on top of this thread and is the worst one. I also got tyres that went off. It's always the left rear tyre near the engine. I replaced it by a wheel from the other side. The tyre pattern is wrong but I can live with that. The cooling might be a problem as the engine is well "protected" by the body. I see you're missing the heat sink though. It's just the standard one. Another serious problem I found was the rear axle. The rear axle is very thin and not hardened. They will bend or break in way of the pins that go into the slots in the wheels. I had a bent axle on the car and in my pile of bits, I found one more broken axle. Straightening the axle is possible.
Materials do not resist to aging. Next to the tyres going bad, there's also the plastic plots for the screws on the chassis or on the gearbox casing that break or split. Even the aluminium tube in the fuel tank I found corroded.
To give more cooling to the engine, I bought some pipe to make an open body as the one on the Kyosho Land Jump. That will make a difference.
I rebuilt the chassis and engine. I'm now figuring out how mount proportional RC. Below 2 before/aft pics
The cars were already obsolete when they came on the market and I consider it more like a toy with a nitro engine than a off road RC car. If you want to race, it better be against another Gassers!!

Re: COX GASSERS arrived today
Can you get some measurements in mm of the rear wing? I want to 3D print a replacement one.
