Just a quick note:
There’s no way to know the condition in which the parts were stored. They may have exchanged hands numerous times, from one atmospheric condition to another. Consequently there’s no real way to test if the parts have become brittle. One way to know is while tapping the screw bosses. While you thread the screw, if you hear little “snaps” or “ticks” then I would suspect the plastic has become brittle. To overcome this you’ll need a blow drier. Warm the screw boss. Be careful not to let it get hot, just warm. Then, tap the screw a turn or two, back it out and warm the part again. This pattern will expand the plastic, relieve the tension, and allow you to tap the boss completely. There's no guarantee the parts won't break if the plastic is brittle, but it will help.

The body polished up pretty good with Novus, it seems soft and pliable. I will take care tapping the mounting bosses. T he plastic is much softer than most of Cox model airplanes, must be a different type of plastic. Do the parts, dash ass., mirrors, exhaust, windscreen, etc. glue on? What is a good glue? Looks like I will need a doner car for the muffler, driver, box.

The Mercedes hood ornament, exhaust housing and stacks, and the mirror housings and mirrors were all melted in place at the factory. The dash assembly and windscreen are screwed into place, (and should be pre-tapped just like the body halves.) The steering wheel and hood shaft were spring loaded with a circlip to hold them in place. It’s a good idea to have a spare car, even if it’s crummy, to use as a template for assembling your car. I’ve restored a dozen or so W-196’s so don’t hesitate to ask questions. I’ll help when I can.

WOW!! That was the Grail to a few, last min. snipe drove it higher. Not even enough parts to make one model complete, no hoods or body screws.
I can hope the buyer parts out a muffler.

One of our members, Bob (dckrsn) sent me the hard to find super rare muffler for the model. I can't thank him enough!! I was about to give up on the car and part out everything.
The engine was stuck but a little heat and it came apart easily for installing the muffler. Ready to proceed with assembly now, been busier than a movie producer grabbing azz so will have to wait a bit.

I tell you CB just the look of that half body with the sparkling Cox engine tucked inside gets my juices flowing. Good on Bob for contributing.

Wonderful. I would love to see the completed car.

I'll have to say my hats off to the Cox employees that assembled the Mercedes car as it was quite difficult. Thanks to members Mudhen and Bob for parts and advice it is complete.
Many parts had to be fitted, the screw bosses were a problem and even tapping them with a body screw caused stress marks in the plastic. I wound up enlarging the holes so that only a few threads on the end of the screw engaged. There was still enough purchase to hold the halves together well.

Notice the wheels aren't on the axles yet, I assembled this way only to find the outside c clips will not go on, had to take it back apart.

Good question about exhaust, I assume the flywheel fan was to pull air out the large body hole. The muffler can only go one of two ways, its possible I have it 180 out.
If there is a 50/50 chance of getting something wrong I lose every time.
1961 cox mercedes benz racer - Page 2 Dsc01615

This shows the muffler open, move the tab down closes it

Well i would say that's right then , just wondering about the plastic getting burnt ? If the engine is turning up 14K , the fan will pull a lot of heat for sure . Small Cox Logo Doug does that tank have the overflow tube on the bottom? i have never seen one of 5cc.

There’s an interesting anecdote regarding the fan blades. Bob Carlson was a recent graduate from Cal Poly and part of the engineering team for the Mercedes.
He was tasked with designing the fan to help vacate smoke/heat from the engine bay. His original drawings had curved blades.
When Roy visited the “Hacienda,” aka the engineering department, he took issue with the fan blades and decided they should be straight.
Bob, who was, “fresh out of school and kind of knew it all,” disagreed with Roy.
Soon after, Cole Williams, who designed the car, told Bob the blades would be straight.
The boss always wins, I suppose.

Its hard to tell but it looks like a dark red, maroon color, I think these were metallic also. Don't see many this color.
The left rear mirror is missing, windscreen cracked and the screws that hold the nose look to be busted out. Maybe could fetch a couple hundred on eBay.
Sure would like the box and driver though.

I just ran across this topic in which the last reply was approximately 6 months ago.  Got me to thinking of the Mercedes that I purchased in the 80's from a gentleman that never ran his. One of those situations that if it is for sale and wanted, then one better buy it.

Thought I'd post some further images of mine in case it helps with some of the previous thread respondents. Missing the box, numbers and instructions but not the bridal.

Very interesting and informative site. Hope this helps with the community.

Sincerely appreciate the location of the instructions for the Mercedes.

I would truly appreciate a scan of the stickers to complete this model that has been sitting for 30+ years in my possession.

Would you know where or what brand of self adhesive sheet would be best to try printing them out?

Thank you again.
