Old "new guy"!

Hey gents! Just a quick howdy ! Now retired...time for the old hobbies. (Can't fish ALL the time!). Havn't fired up a Cox engine in 50+ years , miss the smell of nitro and Castor oil! Wanted to get Ito R/C...can't afford it! Then I remembered my old control line days in the early 60's. But alas...all my planes got abandoned somewhere in one of 30 some moves in the last 40 yrs. but I did find a nice old PT-19 and some accessories in an old box in mother in-laws basement! With a stuck motor...and a spare motor! Probably a good plane to start with after all these years. Unfortunately not much for hobbie shops around here anymore. Can't find any supplies. It's all cars and electric foam planes! Can't do internet with no credit cards! Bummer! I do have two full cans of Cox fuel from 1978! Anyhow... glad to be here,..probably not much to contribute at this point....but lots to relearn. I've been reading lots of old posts! Particularly get a kick out of " whatever the case may be" Mark! Ha!
Warning..., be prepared for lots of dumb questions! No one around here flys control line anymore!

Hi OhBee,

Welcome back.

You didn't mention your location, but you may be close enough to someone in the hobby to find help.

Ask any questions before working on those engines, as they are easy to damage with some existing tools that were made for the job.

My first question is did you find any Cox tools, or glow head clips in that box of stuff? You will probably need both to get those engines running.

A good soak in glow fuel for a few days is a good place to start. Dried Castor oil can block fuel orifices, and freeze pistons and cranks in long term storage.

Ask here before working on those engines, as it could save you some trouble.

Hey Bill! No...no tools in the goodies I found! But being a retired Honda motorcycle mechanic of 42 yrs. no stranger to engines! It all came back to me when I started on the really stuck one! Unstuck and nice and clean now! BUT.... Sitting in the bottom of a box in a damp basement for decades .... Most all of the fins on the glow head are corroded off! No place to even attach a wrench if I had one! Have to find something to rig up for a battery and try to lite'em up! Had a friend that was into this stuff , checked with him after not seeing him for thirty years....and he'd just sold EVERYTHING! Until last year he belonged to a local club, said only one person there did C/L. It sure ain't the 60's anymore! I'm in SE Mn near Rochester. Used to have lots of good hobbie shops here back in the day....not much of anything anymore except electrics.
Was getting antsy to fly but 17 " of snow predicted tonight! CRAP! It had all just finally melted! Maybe need to retro fit some skis?

to the forum! I'm up in Roseville, I think we only got about 2" of snow. We've lost a good selection of hobby shops over the years. What's left of them no longer carry anything Cox. Lost a few flying fields too.

Hi Steve, Welcome to the forum! We can get you going again.. believe me! Control-line building/flying is alive and well here.. be it Cox-powered or other engines.

Some short advice; Save the fuel that you have. It may still be good. There are other methods for cleaning engine parts without using it for that. You can still get the correct fuel.. but make sure you ask here before buying any. The wrong type can ruin your Cox engines.

If those fuel cans are factory sealed they may still be good. If they are open then pour some out on a white paper towel. The fuel should be clear or dyed (ping or blue?) and most definitely not brown or black.

If it is the wrong color (back or brown) then using it to soak with is about all it is good for. The fuel will have absorbed water and the inside of the cans will have some rust, so the cans will need emptied and dried to save as display pieces.

Properly sealed fuel kept in "climate controlled" conditions protected from light, heat, and sub-zero F freezing has a very long shelf life. Indefinite, many many years.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM OhBee !!! You say you have no CC well there is Paypal and pretty easy to use , most people take it . You can pick up some supply's here for engines and even kits for sale ! If your looking for something ask here first till you get the hang and back in stroke lol!

Haha, "whatever the case may be Mark." Yeah he's a moving target. That started when he first joined and wanted to disginguish himself from another long-time Mark. Others, including myself, have adopted that habit.

A credit card or PayPal account can certainly help speed up the process of buying and shipping but all of these links will sell you mail order with a personal check..... usually always a delay waiting for it to clear the bank before shipping

I believe Wally World sell pre paid Visa cards that work most places up to the limit in the account

Thanks guys! We got about a foot and a half of snow here last night! Spent today making windshields for the PT19. Those and the pilot were MIA. co-pilot still hanging in there! Planes in nice shape otherwise. It's a 66-69 vintage near as I can figure, with a yellow fuselage. My other engine is on a blue PT firewall...so I think somebody destroyed one and got a replacement that was never flown much!

Hi again Steve. Very cool that you are a veteran motorcycle engine mechanic! That really helps to understand a lot about our model engines. Parts are available for both; the engine and the airplane. The PT19 is probably the model that most anyone who had a Cox airplane had! If that blue fuse is intact.. you can find parts to make it a whole airplane again.

The newer PT19's (post Babe Bee) utilized a modular product-engine and external fuel-tank. I have this style.. and have had trouble with the tank coming off. The fuel-barb on this tank leaves little to be desired too.

Most if not all PT19's had a left-hand 6" x 2" propeller. You may find that your engine has a L/H starter-spring. You can run a R/H prop.. but Cox's reason for the L/H is that it tends to roll the airplane away from you.. helping a lot with line-tension.

There are decal-graphics here on the site.. if you'd like to reproduce any that are damaged.

This is a 66-69 PT with a yellow fuselage. Babe Bee tanked engine.
Here's a tidbit about my user name. I used to belong to a blackpowder club. My last name is Baker but there was already an unrelated Baker in the club. So I got nicknamed O. B. or " the OTHER Baker. I just spelled it out ...OhBee! Seems to fit in here even better!
