Wasn't there a first in the series? Venom something or other. Was it serialized and are there any for sale round-abouts?

Purple Python, Copperhead ?????????? Empty Cox International series of .049 limited edition engines

Post  fredvon4 Wed Nov 02, 2016 8:30 am

If any are around for sale, I do not know...occasionally I saw a few hit e-bay

I have all #55s in the series:

Xtreme--------- Jun 25 2012
Blue Bullet----- Nov 1 2012
Terminator-- ---Mar 7 2013
Purple Python-- Mar 10 2015
Copperhead-----Oct 20 2016

I still need to find New Tornado or Grish Clear props and make a display case for them

Due to the cost, these are about the only engines I bought just one of. I typically buy two or more so I can use at least one on a model

I hope wife never figures out I have over $500 in engines to just look at

I had a couple of low production Valentine engines but sold all of them to folks who posted wanted ads

As much as I love my Cox engines, I have to admit to this being a much wasted expenditure of my limited hobby Bucks

I never would have just ordered all 5 at once... But, (over the course of years), as each was discussed here on CEF, with several threads where Bernie was asking for help with naming, I got "invested"....pun intended

Because of this question from Bob, I think I am changing my mind on the cool looking props and some display case idea

I am getting better and better at creating airplanes and finishing...and have several now that are just models I spent too much time and effort on and will never fly....(lil jumpin bean and Big Otto) mostly because as I age I am more and more prone to perfecting my Figure 9 signature maneuver

I am seriously thinking of one specific model replicated many times with differing finish and trim to complement these little works of eye candy

Example: I bought a nostalgia Top Flite Combat Kitten double kit ( for way too much $$) that I WILL NEVER build as the wood is horrible... Recently we discussed that plane on Stunt Hangar.  Pat King drew and kitted a more modern version with superb wood laser cut...I got one for the low price of $30 ( 1/3rd what the junk Top Flite kit was)

That is one option

Another is the Roger Harris Laser cut Baby Ringmaster Bi-Plane...If I could con him into the time to cut 5 or 6 of them....

I had fun adapting that BiPlane kit to my version, and I have flown it two years in a row now for the RM Fly A Thon

These Lil beauties would all look cool on the nose of either plane

Or, optionally I may create yet another variant of my own, fast to build, Sig airfoil balsa slab wing model(s)

Or maybe, because they are Hot Rod engines, I might model ---for first time--- a Shoe String or Perky

Because this s CEF...I am open to suggestion or opinions

I see your predicament Phred.. and can relate somewhat. Although I'm not a model-engine collector.. I still cherish the ones I have.. along with the flying models I've built for them.

Yes.. you have some money in those engines.. but it would have been spent on something. Personally.. I'd build five different airplanes. Maybe a "series" of Blackhawk-Models fighters. Fly em' if you want.. but don't pressure yourself. You're like me; in that you enjoy building. Building a display-case for them would be fun.. but then what? Look through the glass at your engines that wish they had a model to be mounted on... Neutral Laughing  That's a bit cynical.. but wouldn't you rather have a 5-airplane project to work on for the Winter? Laughing Shocked Researching trim-schemes for each one.. Military or Racing (civilian) variants..?

Your wife doesn't need to know that you're spending another $150-200 on kits.. just limit your time in the shop to 15min./twice a week. Laughing

Seriously though.. I like the notion that Roger Harris cut you some more kits. I hope his wife is feeling better. He's a good man.. and stepped up to plate with the kits he designed and offered-up to us here. You mentioned those five engines looking like hotrod engines.. Think about building five rat-rod versions of the ring-bipe.. maybe with differing wing-strut lengths/wing-offset. Maybe cut a flap into one of the wings? Get creative with wheel-spats/trim.  Each one would have it's own aggressive personality! Imagine being able to pick up and lovingly fondle each one individually.. knowing you could throw a set of lines on it.. and fly it within minutes.. if you wanted.  Smile

I love his ply-doublers with the flame cut-outs! They scream "hot-rod"! Maybe you could source/ship the wood.. if he could get the time on the laser? I'm an instigator.. did I mention it?

Roddie...you think a lot like I do for these Hot Rod .049s

5 or 6 RM Biplane variants would be fun as it was a fairly easy to build and finish model

I dunno. Many of my NIB engines will never be ran, to me they are like jewelry. You look at them, admire them even, get them out and show them to friends. You can't eat them or pound a nail with them but you can run them risking a crash or worse a fly-away.

Mine will get passed down, to my son probably who may or may not share my feelings. His problem. But there is a side of me that would love to see one of these Cox 100 off's ran. I expect video Fred..... Smile

I think that engines should be bench-run occasionally.. exercising normal care. After they're run.. wipe them down, work some light-oil into them.. and put them away; whether it's in a display-case or a zip-seal bag. Why not run them? That's what they were made for. If they won't run.. why would you want to hand them down anyway? Laughing

To each his own.. I get it. I just see the pride in owning an engine; being in running it every now and then. If and when I hand-down my engines.. (God willing..) they'll have some documentation prepared concerning their history and my experience with them.. which I would hope to be operational. I don't display any of my engines.. but keep most of them oiled in zipper-bags with some written history in a sealed bag accompanying.. It's a good habit to get into.. (the written notes) because time goes by.. and it's good to have a record in case you forget.. or someone else wants to know, later-on down the road. I'll even attach notes to models.. regarding work that needs to be done.. weblink info. on a system or flight statistics/history.

Many people used to keep written records years ago.. but in this digital age, we're getting away from pen/paper record-keeping. A note in your penmanship, describing your experience with an item.. can be as precious as the item itself.. especially to family.

I hope I haven't strayed too far from the topic in my opinion here. It seemed to have some overtones regarding things we leave behind.. or "hand down".

I love this song performed by Marc Cohn..

If I were to rank them according to visual appeal the Purple Python would lead the way with the Blue Bullet a close second.  The Copperhead would be tail-end Charlie.

I like roddie's idea of cleaning and oiling after a run and storing in plastic zip bags.  I have done that for a couple of years now including the date I ran them and my inventory number.   With all these engines to play with, why run new or special purpose engines.  Well, to answer my own question.  Why do you climb the mountain?  To see what's on the other side.  But, I'm sure all of those colorful engines will run and run well.

Bob, I love the OK Cubs. I don't know why but my son and I have a ball with them. We just run them. I put them on the bench and just stare in amazement. They're just cool little engines from a long gone era. I have 2 OK .19's that certainly are loud probably the loudest .19 I have ever heard.

Yes,  I'm a Cubs fan to, the Chicago type.  I was thrilled to see them come back and win it all.

But, yes Ken the OK's are nice too.  They don't receive the respect that Cox engines do but the few I have ran are nice runners.  The engines pictured in the bags are ones that I have ran or robbed the glow plugs from to equip my other engines.   I do have a few NIB's tucked away.

Nice collection Mark, I did not realize the variety of the colors that were available.  Did you anodize the blue one?
