Getting ready to throw a couple PeeWee .020's in the crockpot with green antifreeze overnight on low heat. Anything I need to know? I removed the gaskets and pickup tube.

Also, should I remove the cylinder by the exhaust with the tool or use pliers with leather/tape? If pliers, where on the cylinder?

Well, got the cylinders off and they are now cooking.

Didn't see this earlier, I always use the tools to remove the cylinders when possible. I only resort to other measures when needed. 9.999999 times out of 10 the tools work just fine. As far as the antifreeze is concerned let simmer on low and check in the morning.

Craftsman ignition pliers, part#94513 roughly 5.5" long,nearly pocket sized channel lock pliers work on 020 and 010 nicely with wrapped jaws,not sure you actually could distort a cylinder with these,but you could monkey up the fins if not wraped Shocked

I like using these because its not overkill sized hand tools lol!

But they aren`t the cheap way to go if this is your only use for them,I have found them to be nearly as handy as my leatherman and swiss pocket knife.........MacGuyver methods=results Rolling Eyes

I know a few people who have distorted cylinders by using pliers and even between 2 blocks of wood! I almost did myself Rolling Eyes

Don't cook the cylinder or piston, you only remove the important castor protection. If there is too much varnish on the cylinder (very rare in my experience) just remove a little with soft steel wool.

Thanks guys.

It got really late, so instead of risking the tool on the cylinder, (ruined a number of .049s this way) I used some channel locks with a few folds of rag. it came off easily.

Unfortunately I did put the cylinder and piston in. But, when I went to check it this morning, it was all cold and the dirt and grime was there. confused

Plugged it in to a different outlet, removed the piston/cylinder, and will check on it this afternoon. Hope I didn't mess up my little fondue pot. Smile

I have done this before with good results. Melts everything foreign away.

I don't understand why you would boil the internal parts of an engine, that's just asking for truble. A muffler is one thing but a bit of patina on the engine doesn't hurt....

What exactly are you trying to do? If rust removal there is a product at your local auto parts store that dissolves rust and is non caustic, works on all metals. The name of the product eludes me but it is in a grey container. It's called 2000 something. I will find out when I get home. It's a little pricey but it works good. I toss old bolts and rusty motorcycle parts into it and the next day they look brand new.

The parts had some thick congealed castor and green muck. This method works great, as long as you are careful; melts everything right off. A lot of guys over on RCGroups do it all the time. No rust.

I do not really boil them, per say, they sit overnight on low heat. The reason I do it is because it is relatively easy, no scrubbing, and cheap. (until the pot decides to quit LOL) Seized engines, too, free up.

But not to worry, my pot is now broken, and will not heat at all. Very Happy

They got some fuel and alcohol instead.

You might be on to something... Very cheap anodizing! Very Happy

Wonder what would happen if one left a glow head simmering for 3 days....

The good stuff "Ideally you want an ultrasonic parts bath with TC (thermal control) Don't even thing about using a crock pot that's only for yummy production!

i just love to sit down, take the engine completely apart and give every part a good rubdown
with my tooth brush and some fuel ^^
but if you really wanna cook em i guess its somewhat more thorough.
