Very good buying Interesting to read WW2 label.
Filling jars with cellulosic thinners and waiting several days is OK to clean them.

Re: Old Cleveland P 40 kit
Hi akjgardener,
I learned this tech from CP here...
Strap the bottles on the business end an orbital sander. (with tape)
Add any thinner, you think...
It is a 'coarse' ultrasonic cleaning method that works great.
I bet you can save the labels with careful Duct taping...
I have a glass bottle that fits on my 'orbital sander', that has cleaned allot of [bleep] !
Thanks CP,
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Re: The dope issue, sometime back I cleaned 4 oz. SIG dope bottles that dried by filling with some Acetone and soaking a couple days. It softened it enough that I could clean the bottles totally. sifted out the softened paint globs and reused for another bottle to clean.akjgardner wrote:I bought this because I liked the box art and it’s a p 40 , when I opened it up it looked untouched. The little note leads me to be leave this came out during WW II . It looks brand new but the dope has hardened over time . Anyone have an idea how I can clean out the jars ? Thanks for any help
I used GIMP on your photo uploads for better readability, enjoy!
It is the way your cellphone was oriented when taking the photo. It assumes you will be holding it 180 degrees the other way. Using photo editing software can correct this.akjgardner wrote:Also , why are my pictures showing up upside down ?

Thanks George , I’ve got plenty of acetone . I might have trouble getting the old caps off. I might try to heat them

That's quite a find Joe, and the "Important Notice" speaks to how important balsa was to the war effort, used in a lot of products that helped win the war.
What are your plans for it?

Re: Old Cleveland P 40 kit
we’ll , I was going to build it , but after seeing it in pretty good condition, I decided to display it in my hobby room . And yes , the De Havilland Mosquito ( Wooden Wonder ) comes to mind . That’s a lot of balsa wood.rsv1cox wrote:That's quite a find Joe, and the "Important Notice" speaks to how important balsa was to the war effort, used in a lot of products that helped win the war.

Re: Old Cleveland P 40 kit
I'll add more later (as in "I'm drooling to seenthe plans").
Acetone or lacquer thinner. Scape/transfer as much as you can into a clean 4 ounce bottle...then do this with the bottle of goo. Wait a while while the machine does all the hard work.

Re: Old Cleveland P 40 kit
Just a side comment, I noticed that rubber powered dime scale plans around that time, may be a decade earlier used 1/16th inch square wing leading and trailing edges. Balsa, unless extremely hard, will easily snap and warp when covered and under flight loads.
Thus, I gather that they must have used basswood, other hardwood, or bamboo, as these would be considerably stronger. This goes for the early Comet and Guillow "dime scale" kits.
