Re: A decent first CL model?
Yes i suppose as suggested with my first flights i'll just try and keep it level a few feet off the ground.

Suggest keeping the plane at eye-level and flying from the shoulder rather than the wrist. Also remember to include some weight in the outboard wing tip to offset the drag of the flying lines. I suggest the use of Dacron flying lines which are actually quite light ergo less drag.

OK once someone suggested that i should wax the lines for less drag.

A bit beyond practicality IMO. The only benefit would be in consecutive loops where the lines drag agaist each other. Do too many loops in the same direction and line drag will result.
A good CL pilot will keep track of loops made and make loops in the opposite direction to unwind the lines to prevent the lines from twisting around each other in excess.

I don't think I'll be doing loops any time soon:)

With the right airplane you'll find it hard to resist doing loops and even more aerobactics.
Who wants to endlessly go "roundy, round"? BORING!

LOL yup that happened to me when i learned RC loops were all good then the next day i tried inverted
yeah that plane was reduced to heap of balsa dust and splinters.

I drug the rudder in the tall grass,, saved the plane but the ole gluteus maximus was all cinched up during.

Re: A decent first CL model?
Looks like it ought to fly fine. Just needs a little clean up / repair. You could make it a "Forum Project"...post photos as you fix it up, and on through to your first flight!
You might consider ditching the dowel peg handle and using or making a Cox "D" style handle, with clips on the lines at the model's end that allow you to disconnect them. I use medium carpet thread as lead-outs, run from the model's bell crank to some tiny fishing swivels just outside the wingtip guide, since that area gets such a bath in hot castor/fuel.
