Yes they go in between the contra piston and the piston and if they burst the engine will not run they are supposed to burst when the engine is hydraulic locked but they are a bit sensitive so burst when the engine runs for a bit too long or too or anything for that matter.

Is perfection an issue here or does it just have to fit. Also what should I cut it with?

That would be even worse. The fuel outlet tube goes all the way through to the other end of the tank. It would suck air every time you bank right. If you mount the wedge pointed to the front it will suck air every time you bank left.
Put the wedge at the bottom lengthwise and as long as you don't fly inverted it will draw, but it will starve during a descent.
