Tee Dee The Travelling Engine makes its pilgrimage.

Post  batjac Thu Jan 29, 2015 3:31 pm

Well, the rain has finally let up and we had good skies today.  So the Travelling Engine made a pilgrimage to the Jim Walker Memorial Field.   If it’s going around the world, it just HAS to make a stop at Walker Field.

If you don’t know, Jim Walker is often cited as the father of U-Control flight.  He made the first mass produced quick build kit for control line models.  What we’d call an ARF today.

I should be able to put up some flights tomorrow.  Hopefully the flying field should be relatively dry.

I don't know how things are shaking out for you right now, but the offer to come down to Delta Park and fly you and my boys is still open. Then we can hand off the engine. No pressure, but it would be fun to fly together again. I built a 1/2A Nobler for the TE and want to put a couple CEF stickers on it and have whoever flies it with the TE on it sign it with a sharpie. Or something like that.

Tee Dee DRAT!!!

Post  batjac Fri Jan 30, 2015 8:59 pm

Well, I ran out to the flying field to get some flights in.  I set up everything for flying the plane, and then went to set up the video camera.  But when I turned on the camera…. No SD card!!!  ***DRAT***

Ah, well.  I took a picture so you can see it ready to fly.  I put on three flights.  Nothing serious, just a few wing overs and loops.  I’m too afraid of breaking the engine to do more.

I ordered the stuff to do bladder pressure, but it hasn't arrived from Texas Timers yet.  So I ran the engine on balloon pressure.  Balloon pressure works pretty good.  If I didn't already order the fittings for bladder pressure, I might have just stuck with balloon pressure.  It works a treat without the need of forceps or check valves or fine needles or anything.  I also used a Cox competition 6x3 prop.  That way, if I broke a prop, it would be my prop and not the TE's stock.

I love the Stuka! Too bad about the camera. All of my best flights are mysteriously lost to such unforeseen technical difficulties lol. Good work anyway. Thanks everyone for keeping the engine moving. But Mark, if you want to hold onto it until you can get a video that would be great too.

I can't make it down next weekend, and good thing I look, the 14th was open, but something tells me my wife and I are planning something. I have the 21st open to meet you at Delta Park/Jim Walker field. Then I can put in the mail to the next guy right away.

Well, I’m not going to have time to fly again for a while, so I mounted the TE on a tank mount and screwed it to my portable 1/2A test stand. A.K.A, my workhorse.  I shot a quick proof video of me running the engine.  There was no convenient place to put a camera, so I shot video with one hand and started with the other.  You’ll have to forgive the shaky video.  As you see, I sometimes turn the needle in the wrong direction. I dunno, I just love that yellow prop disc.

I cleaned and oiled the engine, and I’ll get it off to Duke asap.  It was fun running the engine, and being part of its travels.  Thanks everyone for letting me be part of the Traveling Engine.

Well, actually, I looked all over and couldn't find my mat, so I just grabbed whatever would make a good sleeve for the afternoon.

Just out of curiosity, is there a difference between the silver venturi and the gold venturi? I have both, but haven't really noticed a difference other than the color.

The engine has now made it to Washington State. I came home from a day at the Monroe RC Expo and swap meet to find a little package waiting for me. Now I need to wait for the rain to pass. I'll get the engine mounted to the 1/2A Nobler.
