I have one of these handles... my hand is almost too big for it.

Re: 1/2A Control Line Handles
First one is too big. You need a line spacing of 2"

So is my hand... barely fits in that one...
Re: 1/2A Control Line Handles
The handles may seem small, but really it's only 4 fingers that go through the hole. You could always make one to custom fit.

Amen brother. I had to learn that the hard way.RknRusty wrote:Just don't let the screw protrude or you'll hook a line on it at the worst of times.

Here's some handles from my collection. Like Ron recommended; a narrow line spacing will decrease sensitivity. 2" spacing is possible with the Sig and Goldberg handles.. Mark Boesen recently posted about using the Goldberg handle's "slotted indexes" as permanent attachments, if your lines are exactly equal length... (no adjustment possible though...)
The "black" handle has a 1-9/16" line-spacing.. and I believe it came with my Cox "Cosmic Wind" model. It's a "2-finger" style.. and is on the idea that Rusty mentioned.
Is the model's "push-rod" set to minimum (least sensitive) control throws on both; the bell-crank and the stabilator's horn? That's where you want it for your 1st flights.

I hate to say it, but the best handles you have are the Cox ones. I say that because they feel flimsy to me so I don't use them.
I use the SIG 1/2A handle like Rusty does. However, I am itching to pull the trigger on a Larry Renger handle.

Re: 1/2A Control Line Handles
One like those three greenish ones at the bottom are what I'm using for fingertip control in that picture above. I had one break once, but still using another one. I do like the Red Sig ones best of all too.WingingIt74 wrote:Here is what I have

Re: 1/2A Control Line Handles
Roddie, can you take a close up shot of that 2-finger handle... That looks like a darn good idea.
Re: 1/2A Control Line Handles
Idk, that li'l handle is designed for a kid to not over control a plane, it would be good for a underpowered trainer, but for anything else it might be a hindrance? Why not just make a handle, there pretty easy.
I'd side with Rusty, the Cox handle or Goldberg or Sig handles work fine, the modified Goldberg can be adjusted somewhat by adding an extra connecters.

Re: 1/2A Control Line Handles
Remember you can MAKE a handle pretty easy too. Some birch plywood, maybe some metal for drilling into for spacing...easy.
The SIG handle is what everybody has for sale currently. Bernie and Matt should both stock it, along with many others.

Re: 1/2A Control Line Handles
Here's close-ups of the "2-finger" handle that you asked for...

and some of the plane that it came with...

My spinner's buggered.. but I think I still have all the parts... The std. horseshoe back-plate fits mine.. and these are the original 5 x 2 and 5 x 4 props that came with it. I've got the wrench somewhere in my tote-box.. along with 3-4 other style Cox wrenches. Geez.. maybe I'll enter this as a second speed contest model?..

Check out the lead weight in the nose... Did Testors use this? or was the Cox engine set-up that much lighter?

Roddie
Re: 1/2A Control Line Handles
i'd guess, due to the size of chunk of lead it was designed that way. You see that often with scale model planes, they just don't have long noses to balance out without nose weight.

Re: 1/2A Control Line Handles
If you make a "D" type (or similar) frame from aluminum or mild steel... that incorporates the "trick" adjustments that you want, you can then use fiberglass or epoxy resin to mold the exact grip of your hand around it. Wear a "tight fitting" Latex or vinyl surgical glove to make the impression, smooth it with a rasp after it hardens, finish sand smooth and seal it. My friend Dave Cook made one of these. He is of the C/L Expert Precision Aerobatics caliber.. and has competed in several AMA NATS competitions. Making a custom "grip" this way, is the ultimate in comfort.. which transfers as less distraction and better concentration during control. You could even use this procedure to make a more comfortable "grip" for a handle you already have.
