Re: tip 101 Lighting
I have florescent lights over every workbench also. They help greatly especially over the lathe when turning small parts. I also have an Ott light for close up work. Not cheap but it puts out the light.

I bought my wife one of those about four or five years ago for her quilting, but she hasn't been using it. So for the last few months it's been sitting on my desk for when I work on models. They are pretty expensive, but they're good.

It's a folding version available from JoAnn Fabrics and includes a built-in magnfier. For detail work I haven't experienced a better source of light.
Model: OTL 13MAG. The cost was, IIRC, $40 on sale. I wouldn't consider that "expensive" all. Try to find better light at a lesser price.
My wife and I like Ott lights so well we have a floor model as well in our living room.

I can't keep my florescents working. I have three dual 48" lamps over my table, but two of them will only work with one tube installed. I know my main mistake is buying them at Lowes. I don't know what their problem is, but I'm sick of it and won't buy anymore from there.

We had problems with the 20W tubes in the cheap fixtures. Try 42W tubes if you dont have them. Also check for corrosion of the pins on each tube. We had problems with this and they would only work on one side.
