Eric,
The TD-1 is somewhat rare, at least in that condition. It was marketed towards the adult crowd in the early-mid 50's?
It really is a beautiful plane, but I have never seen one in real life so I don't know how they fly. Anyway, they are highly collectable.
They have a Space Bug for power.

This is a very nice model, if you look at the bidding a*** -8 is a man on a mission. Must be a new collector bidding up a lot of Cox RTF models.

Winning bid for that well preserved model was $962.04, almost $1,000. That collector really wanted it. I've never seen one in real life either, but it is a nice looking model, probably was a site to behold in the 1950's. Somewhere I saw someone has traced out the outline of the TD-1, so he and others could build one out of balsa and fly it. He just didn't want to take a chance of flying and possibly destroying a rare model.getback wrote:E-Bay Vintage Cox Plane THIMBLE DROME TD-1 Airplane I never seen one but that's just me?!?

I've done the same thing with a Cox Hyper Viper. Been talking about it forever, one of these days I'm going to cut wood. Probably for a Tee Dee .09 or a Thunder Tiger .15.GallopingGhostler wrote:Somewhere I saw someone has traced out the outline of the TD-1, so he and others could build one out of balsa and fly it. Re: Is this That diffarent
My friend Dan finally received the needed parts to get his together. This took almost 38 years to complete. He gave up on finding a elevator as these seemed to be non existent for him. He's not a computer person and essentially tried to find all needed items via flea markets and swap meets. He made the elevator and landing gear. Dan has a few sets of new wings in addition. The original engine is in this one. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=677804292289708&set=pb.513140418756097.-2207520000.1404429189.&type=3&theater
The plane flew remarkably well and fast. I didn't expect that. It required 1 oz. of nose weight inside the cowl. A neat flying plane and Dan had quite a smile after patiently waiting all this time. Ken

Very nice. Is there ever a time when Dan doesn't have quite a smile on his face? I'm sure there is, but it sure is fun to watch him have fun. Holley and Al still talk about meeting him and watching him laugh and dance while flying in Huntersville. Wayne told a couple of very entertaining stories of him at Brodak, especially his team's Junkyard Wars show. And he won the award for having had the most fun of anyone at Brodak that week.

Re: Is this That diffarent
Rusty, I can say he certainly has a admirable quality. I really admire that. Last weekend wasn't the situation. It seemed like our entire club had to work last weekend and it turned out having two back to back beautiful days. We did manage a few flights, he wasn't his smiling happy self until we both had a few flights in. I've known Dan for 30+ years and you pretty much nailed him.
The last few swaps that we attended, one before Thanksgiving last year yielded the needed parts for him to finish the TD-1. As mentioned, it seems pretty crazy to fly such a hard to replace model. Dan however is a different kind of collector. To my amazement, he flew some of his all aluminum planes at one of the contests. I was really amazed. I always saw the models but never witnessed them flying. Ken

I wanted one of those in the mid fifties but $19.95 was WAY out of reach for most of us kids. Those large stamped aluminum wings were light compared to the all-plastic RTF's with much smaller wings.
I don't think I would fly one now. I'd be afraid that the plastic had become brittle with age.

Re: Is this That diffarent
I saw a TD-1 the other day in our club VP's museum. He had a whole box full of them, some of which had been flown. They are really lightweight with thin hollow fully formed airfoils. I thought they were plastic, but apparently it's aluminum. It looks like it would be a great performer, not like some of the lead sleds Cox made. I'd love to have one of them.
