Picked this up at the hobby shop today. I've not seen this type of venturi before, looks like you could drive a truck through it. I've also never seen machining around the exhaust.

You actually can drive a truck through it. You can't, however, suck one through it. Same goes for fuel, but that shouldn't be a problem for you. I'm pretty sure that's an AMD, a meaner power plant than a Big Mig. Do you know if it's an .049 or an .061? Use my little tutorial I wrote for installing a 128tpi NV.

The brass tube size may differ from the Big Mig.

You can probably get a little more power from it by switching to a clamp-ring head and Glow Bee plug.

That's to hold the muffler in place. It has a piece of spring steel that wraps around the cylinder and grooves in the muffler to hold it in place.

Jim you have an AME Zeus in your hand. Made in the same place as Norvel, but not made by Norvel. The case is shorter by about 3/8" compared to a Norvel. The needle doesn't work well with bladder.  Some came without the venturi at all. There was a plastic insert to allow or supposedly allow suction use. The screen and retention ring is missing on this engine. The venturi was far too large of a hole to work correctly. These can really scream. I like to use the APC 4.6 x 3 on these and see rpm's around 25-26K. The head on that engine is stock. It doesn't usually work well and rpm's can easily hit or exceed 1K using a Nelson head. They don't mind the nitro. While this engine appears Norvel like, weight differences are amazingly different. The case is the Aero which has the backwards E. This same short case was also shared by Stels. Stels would manufacture the rest of the parts based on this case and would grind off the Aero logo and mill the exhaust area flat. Stels used a ABC while the AME version you show is ABN. The cases were typically wire wheeled or glass beaded. Ken

Rusty,
Thanks for the link that's basically what I did with my other norvel that looks like this one but without the venturi.

How do I remove the drive plate from this motor, is it the same process as a cox?

Thanks,

Jim

I have an AME as well pretty much the same as yours except mine has an insert (Glow Bee) style head. It is defiantly a screamer. About the drive plate it uses at least mine does anyway a split taper with a ring that presses on to the taper to lock it onto the crankshaft and serves as the drive plate. to get it off it's not too hard but if its really locked on you may have to heat it to get it to release from the split taper.
