Cox Engine of The Month
Strange Cox packaging

Strange Cox packaging
We received an engine, which is obviously a Space Bug, but the insert states “Thermal Hopper”
The box cutout and insert fit the Space Bug perfectly but not the Thermal Hopper.
What comes to mind is correct packaging but wrong imprint on the insert.
Anyone else ever come across this or has an explanation?

Re: Strange Cox packaging
That's what I thought until I tried it with that engine.
First, the insert cutout is a different one and, second, the "cage" is smaller that the box cutout and the venturi is fully inside the "cage"; whereas the cutout in the box supports the venturi at the very edge.

Some examples of engines sold in packages similar to yours.

http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-cox-thimble-drome-049-thermal-460036592
and then there is also this which I'm guessing is just the card cut to fit the rear intake.

The vac-u-form bubble pack is likely the same for the Space Bug and Thermal Hopper to save costs.

Hmm, maybe someone had both engines and the inserts got swapped?
I find it hard to believe that it would leave the factory that way but I suppose it could be possible.

Hard to tell from your small picture but this is what mine looks like
I conclude that the Space Bug box was also used for the TH with cage; whereas the cutout where the SB venture went was left "unfilled" and whereas someone switched the inserts.
That would make sense now
Re: Strange Cox packaging
Sorry for the small pictures, that's all I could find at the moment.
Here's a sold eBay listing of one with a cage mount.

Re: Strange Cox packaging
I looked at mine , a while ago, and came to the conclusion the the plastic cases were the same. It is just the card insert that differs.
I also think that someone managed to swap the cards in a collection. Better check mine next time it comes home!
