Some More Front Yard 1/2A Flying
Got in the mood to get on the computer and crunch down some of the flying video from Friday...or Thursday...or one of those days.
Had a beautiful day to sling castor, even through the peak where the wind picked up a bit, and all the toys made it back into the shop in singular pieces!

I was going to make a comment about tanked engines and the dreaded inverted cutout after the Golden Hawk shut off the first time. Then after watching they both seemed to work fine inverted. So whatever you are doing it’s working!
Thanks for sharing. Maybe I should get off my duff and do something.

Yeah, I figure the Space Bug in the Golden Hawk is about my age, and therefore allowed (like myself) some crankiness. It ran just fine on the first two flights, then started getting hateful, so I flushed it's tank and it was back on the job!

Good stuff, Kim!
You make me feel bad though. Seeing a lot of loops and inverts from a basic log, but my P-40 could only cut grass trying to fly like that! Maybe the next P-40 will be as good as your planes.
I like the Big Otto. That may be on my scratch list soon.
Then there is the in-flight video again. I need to score one of those cameras and build a camera nest in place of a weight box.
Good work all the way around! It looks like you enjoyed yourself. Bravo!

Thank you Jim! Yes. I was shocked to see your post about the P-40. The engine size to airplane size ratio of these planes is so skewed, I'd have thought they'd do whatever in the world they were asked---as long as the engine was running.
I want REAL bad to build "The Zipper", but am making myself work on the projects currently on the table. I'm gonna enlarge it's plan sheet by about 10% to get a little bigger airplane behind that engine.
Hope you an get another P-40 on line soon!!!

Cool stuff , I liked when Otto ran out of fuel. That was great. The other day at the field, one of our senior members Philly Skip brought out his Scientific Baby Stunt Master. Skip isn't one to get everything in order first, he just bolts the engine on and comes out. After some sorting through what props he had and other issues, the plane was going pretty well. I had a smile on my face the entire time. He was 10 years old again. There's something magical about these 1/2A's, there really is. They're what brought me into the hobby and they always have captured my attention. I'm quite certain everyone on this forum can relate.

Kim does a fantastic job both video and editing I always enjoy these productions
pity we don't have a easy way to go back to early productions for nostalgia...Ken, Rusty, KIm and others have all shared a lot of cool videos

Thank you guys! It means a lot to get notes from fellow enthusiasts. My Breezy Hill Buds are the closest chance of face-to-face trading memories and current goings on with these things, and now we've got a fence between us. This current deal has got us texting a lot more.

Thanks Ken,
"Magical" is right! This stuff IS almost like an additive drug, and each time I launch one of these little planes, there's chance that I'm gonna get that millisecond flash-back to when my biggest problem in the world was getting that next can of fuel.
Big Otto is particularly important to me as it was the first kit I built that had a built-up wing (making it a "Real" airplane!), and as you noted, when it ran out of fuel, it was still good for almost a half-circle worth of glide, with the challenge being to to roll it smoothly onto that single wheel. Compared to my beloved PT-19's "rather steep" glide (though it IS better than often given credit for), Big Otto was was almost like a sailplane after it's engine quit.
I've got at least two more of Mr. Musciano's planes waiting for paint, and of course---ad infinitum--they've got their special memory/stories too. Today may be their day to get some color.
All you guys be safe!

Loved Big Otto straining at the leash like a big dog wanting to play.
Waiting impatiently for the Zipper a favorite of both of us.

Re: Some More Front Yard 1/2A Flying
I have lived in the country my whole life,,,unforeseen circumstances have me moving to town within a month. Granted its a small rural town...but town nonetheless. No more walking out the door to fly. I think I'm really going to hate this lack of space and quiet!
.....but I will have a full basement to set up a hobby area!
