Does the battery just wind down to land or is there some sort of timer on the motor?

There are timers available for this type of flying. Also though, some people will use a transmitter and receiver and that will give you full throttle response. From what I saw, they just hang the transmitter from their belt. Receiver is on the plane. Either way works.

Electric controline flying just don't seem right! ...too much junk to hang on the plane!

Igor is pretty famous in the control line community. He has won the NATS a time or two so I am sure he makes it look easier than it is. However, the speeds are way down which is nice and you can fly in any weather!
