Mitsubishi Hamp

Mitsubishi Hamp
I started this project a couple of years ago, back before I moved from Oregon. I built it and covered the wings and fuse, but was not too excited about cutting out the windshield panels and the fin insignia. Then we suddenly decided to move (two weeks from deciding to move and when we were out of our house).
It sat in a box until about eight or nine months ago, but I still was not enthused about finishing the trim. But, knowing that Doug Hart of Willie Nillies fame would be at S.M.A.L.L., I decided to finish it off since I used a Willie Nillies Baby Ringmaster wing kit to build this around. I picked the Mitsubishi A6M3 Hamp because it’s a late in the war Zero with clipped wings, so a better fit for the BRM wing.
I did a little more experimenting to find what I thought was the best way to use the Cricut cutter to cut Monokote. When I was satisfied, I made up files for the cockpit windows and the fin numbers. Came out pretty good, I think.
I wanted this done so that I’d have my Pacific Theater set. Here you can see the Zero with the Wildcat I also built with a WN BRM wing kit. I’m going to pull the landing gear off the Wildcat, since landing gear on a 1/2A is more of a liability anyway.

Re: Mitsubishi Hamp
Wow! That's a beautiful build, Mark. The two planes together are quite photogenic.
I'd love to see a "dog fight" between the two! Is there anyone you would trust to simultaneously fly one while you fly the other?
I wouldn't even consider streamers...just "pew pew pew" really loudly from the trailing pilot as they get close enough to be in the same frame of a video or photo.

Those are really nice Mark! A whole lot of Cox 1/2 A fun. Almost too nice to fly combat with but new ones can always be made. How did you construct the fuselage? Perhaps a P40 next??

Colors all work Mark. Green, black, red, yellow. Cockpit detail on both is excellent.

Re: Mitsubishi Hamp
Thanks, Guys!
Jim, I’ve never been two-up in a circle, and I don’t move so well with my back lately. But if there are a couple of hotshot combat pilots at S.M.A.L.L. that want to give it a go for a demonstration flight, I’d be willing.
Eric, I thought that would be a good place to maiden them.
Mike, the fuselages are just ¼” sheet. I took a profile view of the planes and sized them to the BRM wing, then cut as seemed appropriate. I did these fuselages by hand, but if I were to do these again I’d make up cut files and do them on my Cricut machine. They’d come out so much better aligned. Quicker and easier, too. Man! I really love my Cricut machine! I could do a whole warbird set around the BRM wing. But, after S.M.A.L.L., I have to cool it on the new model building. I have to dedicate more time to working on my full scale plane.

Re: Mitsubishi Hamp
Really nice work, Mark, especially love the profile F4F Wildcat. Coincidentally, it has the same color blue that I painted my own design F4F profile but in dope. That was in the early 1970's while in high school. I trimmed off the back edges of the Cox red postage stamp engine, used the sheet metal steel salvaged from a used Polaroid instant camera cartridge for motor mounts. Difference in mine is I used a flat balsa sheet wing.
You did a really nice, clean trim work on both of those planes, especially the cockpit lines are so clean along with the Zero's tail markings.
With that airfoiled wing and powerful Tee Dee, looks like they are really nice CL circle flyers. Looking forward to seeing you fly those.
