Question on Sure-Starts

Question on Sure-Starts
I have a couple, do they run well without the choke tube? Makes them hard to mount with that tube on.
Re: Question on Sure-Starts
I believe the tube is simply to make starting easier. I don't think it effects performance. I could be wrong though.

Re: Question on Sure-Starts
Like GO was saying the tube is just an extension of the venturi. Once removed it operates just like any horseshoe backplate.
All that tube does is allow you to pull fuel through the line.

One thing to check for is flashing around the venturi opening to ensure that you get sufficient airflow when the backplate is mounted flush on a plywood firewall.
You may also need to shorten the backplate screws. With the choke tube removed, the screws may bottom out in the crankcase threads before they tighten up.

I am not paid by vendors to place commercials here, but you may want to try this engine mount especially designed to accommodate the choke tube on Surestarts:

Reed valve COX engines that mount with their their backplates facing the firewall are all less easy to prime and start without the choke tube...thus I would not abandon it but use the mount on the link above, instead.

I've got one to try, bought it from them actually. Little worried about moving the CG farther out, but yet have a plane to try it on though.

Especially with R/C planes you have stuff inside the fuselage (e.g. batteries, fule tank etc.) that you can place a bit towards the rear to compensate the engine placed a bit further from the CG..
I know it is not fully correct but with the elevator trimmed a bit up you end up with the same result as with the placement of the internals towards the rear.

.
How did I not notice that before? I've looked at that a couple of times, and not connected the dots. Now I'm going to have to order one and use it on my Q-Tee. I wish I'd noticed that a couple of months ago.

Re: Question on Sure-Starts
I don't know....
For me the choke tube is not enough of an improvement over the original design. In my experience a couple prime runs pulls the fuel through the line.
In my lowly opinion having to buy an item to make the the original item function properly means the original design was poor.
However, the RC engine that Travis posted was a darn good use of that choke tube! Whoever came up with that design deserves a pat on the back.

Re: Question on Sure-Starts
For me, I find a properly clean and operating engine to pull fuel fine on it's own. I'll just flip it over a few times without the clip on the glowhead and I'll usually have fuel in the line. Usually anyway. Sometimes there are those stubborn ones.

It is funny how things come and go with time...
These types of air-limiting chokes were quite common in the early 60-ties on the OS PET for instance....
