Goodyear Speed

That looks like fun. I don't think we have any racing enthusiasts at my club. Maybe I can start up something light, cheap, and good for a few beginners. I bet some of our carrier people might be interested. I might peruse some rules and bring it up next month. Or at 1/2A day in September.

Many of the racing events are going away and at a fast pace. The northwest crowd seem to keep the torch lit. For myself and those in the northeast it's getting scarce. Two weeks ago when we did clown and Goodyear, 1/2A Goodyear was also to take place. While I never participated in this event I've wanted to for years. Generally other events fall in or around the time these events take place and I never get to go. I made it a point to go this time and it didn't happen due to lack of participation. This is a Cox reed valve event using the stock tanks. This is similar to Mouse, with the exception of the scale outline of the planes.  While these events are really a lot of fun, they need the discipline of the participants. It can get out of hand real quick.  The rules can get twisted and there just can't be any gray areas which someone always chooses to find. I prefer the Sportsman events where simplicity is key. Out of the box, store bought props,  bolt it on and go fly. This is one particular reason I enjoy Foxberg so much. Brodak runs the racing events as such.  Simple engine, simple tank and simple plane. Fuel shutoff's complicate matters and while it can be used for a overlean engine deterrent it really becomes a necessity for the required pitstops for the other events.  Ken

Goodyear sounds obviously like models representing any of the old Goodyear racing planes. How about Foxberg, what is that? Planes with Fox engines, no doubt. I'd like to add to my hobby interests and this seems like something I could more easily do than combat. Maybe not quite as much carnage after a race. Mike Londke has been trying to coax me into combat, but I'm not sure I'm physically or monetarily up to that challenge.

Rusty, this a very simple event. Goldberg planes Buster, Shoestring and the Cosmic wind. Brodak has rekitted these and they're not to my liking. While they may match the outline, they're not in my honest opinion designed as racers. The wing construction is designed to be used as a stunter. Fox .35's to be used with a 2 Oz. plastic tank. Brodak has changed their rules and allows the LA .25. This is my opinion has ruined the event there. They also allow the use of Flite Streaks, and Brodak's Lightning Streak. This is due to square inches. I'm not opposed to the plane style, just the engine. Line lengths are 60' + or - 6" with no internal clips. Leadouts to be placed PER PLAN. Everyone tries to cheat here creeping them forward. Wheels to be a minimum of 1 1/2" and for a single gear a minimum of 2" commercially available wheels. 100 laps timed with a minimum of 2 pitstops. Feature race at the end is 200 laps with a minimum of 3 pitstops. Calculating pitstops is crucial and this can be risky because the way the race is designed YOU MUST short tank one of the tanks. Knowing how many laps you need and also when the engine will quit could cost you an additional pitstop and the race. Ken
