Check how far up the piston goes in the bore at TDC. This can vary from one engine to another. A worn conrod/piston assembly will also make the piston sit too low at TDC. If the piston is too low at TDC, then you can shave off a little of the crank-case top to lower the cylinder.

Also, you don't need any gasket below the disc when the disc is made from copper or brass. So in case you have that, simply remove the gasket.

Very interested in this topic. I was just starting to wonder about trying to convert an engine to use either nitro or diesel. If I read this correctly, you just installed a copper disc in place of the head gasket? Pictures would also be appreciated. Funny thing is that today at work, I was talking to a co-worker about diesel engines. Thank you.

No not really, the compression ratio needs to be adjustable and it is very sensitive.
The best way is to buy a conversion head made by RJL, and sold by Mecoa.

i have seen engines that just use a copper disk under the glow head
it can be done but they run verry bad

I have the Davis one. The Teflon disks were designed to blow if you over-compress the engine enough to overheat it. Saves the engine. Some folks do not like that margin of safety and prefer the RJL one. If you start breaking crankshafts, there is a heavy-duty crankshaft available.

The problem with the Teflon disc is that they don't seal well enough and they always break sooner or later...

A leaking head ca be very dangerous on a diesel engine, it will trick you into increasing the compression ratio until it fires and then the compression ratio is too high and something will break...

but you lose the protection of the teflon

There is another problem with the Teflon, it doesn't hold heat well and the engines doesn't run as well as with a metal head.

Yet another issue is that the disc covers the whole cylinder bore and the screw for the counter piston becomes very sensitive.

And the list goes on. The head is too simple in its construction to make a usable product, and one is much better of with a proper diesel conversion head.

All these things were well known and criticised when Davis Diesel Development came out with these heads some 35 years ago (or is it more?). There was therefore a lot of competing companies with better products. Such as RJL and even a swedish one called Böhlin (made by Mats Böhlin, an engine builder and competing in F2C at the time).

The site is just old, I haven't had any problems with ordering from them in the past. If you only buy a conversion head I think the shipping will be around $10. Just send them and e-mail and ask for a quotation. They have many other useful things too, such as really small spinners with cox engine adaptors.
